Manny may gift us a spot

The rule states the 5 highest rated conference champions are in. What people like Pate are saying is if Duke wins: Tulane and JMU would get in due to that rule, but then they might feel obligated to put Miami in over ND as an at large team due to not completely locking the ACC from the playoffs. It is not that Miami would take Duke's spot as ACC champion
They can't just change Miami for ND next week for no reason.

I mean they could but they wouldn't be able to explain it in any rational way. Neither team plays and we don't have any common opponents that plays either.

It would mean having to rank us above ND today if that were a serious consideration.

Not unless they come out and straight up say "We were wrong"

Doesn’t the rule state the highest 5 RANKED conference champions? What if there are only 4 ranked? Last week Tulane was the only G5 ranked. Could they use that as a way to open a other at large spot?

good point. we shall see tonight.
right now, North Texas and JMU are not ranked

And if happpens that Tulane is the highest rated G6 champions, guess what they beat Duke this season, so perfectly valid for them to be the 5th conference champion over the bull**** Duke team that fluked their way to a championship game
Bro, did you just imply that a head to head would matter to the cfp committee? lol you know that wont matter

If Duke wins the ACCCG, they will still be ranked below two G5 conference champs so will not get an automatic bid. There's no way the ACC gets locked out of the playoffs. The committee will have to put Miami in under that scenario. Go Blue Devils.

If Virginia wins, they're in.

I don't see any way Duke actually wins, but let's conduct the entire thought experiment where Duke wins.

The winner of UNT-Tulane is in the playoffs. This will be a placeholder berth, as both have lame duck staffs and players. But, there is no conceivable way Duke leapfrogs either of them.

JMU is ranked even higher than those teams. Troy (22.5 point dog) must beat JMU for Duke to even be considered. Without a Troy win, none of the next part matters.

In the extraordinarily unlikely event that Troy wins, Duke would get in over a 9-4 Troy. Duke would then be compared to the winner of the UNLV-Boise game. Both teams are similarly ranked to Due right now. If UNLV wins, they'd go to 11-2. I don't think the committee would leave them out. If Boise wins, they'd go to 9-4. At that point, there would actually be a chance Duke could get in the playoff over both Troy and Boise.

None of this is going to happen, mind you. The ACC is going to guarantee Virginia wins this game.

I also think Pate's logic about the ACC "not getting shut out" is based on sentiment, not reality. The committee doesn't give a flying **** if the ACC "gets left out."

If we're not above Notre Dame tonight and they're still below OU, the only hope we have is if we jump BYU whether that's tonight or if they lose to TTU, and Bama beats UGA which would put them over ND. That would leave ND at 10 and Miami at 11, which would (i assume) make them swap us since we would have the h2h over a team directly above us. Or they just say **** Miami and leave us at 12 regardless, which is more likely based on what we've already seen.

Yeah- Pate said the optics of no ACC team would be bad so they could possibly manipulate their at large rankings to get Miami in.

Let me be clear- this is not happening.

We are discussing the likes of Duke, JMU, etc. making the playoffs to compete for a National Championship (over us).

This is where we are at with professional college football.

Let that marinate. Process that. **** teams in; good teams out.
This is definitely the last year the committee accepts the 5 conference champions as auto bids. Moving forward it’ll be just the 12 best teams, which will end up being a SEC/B10 showcase
