Manny Diaz putting too much pressure on new DB's

While the stat line of 41-13 might look alright on the box score, it doesn't tell the whole story. Defense lacked juice today and I'll chalk it up to playing a team like BCU. If we had played a better team today I don't think we end up with a W so it's a good thing we can fix our mistakes now.

Manny Diaz gimmicky blitz heavy defense did not do what we all expected. I wonder if he is putting too much pressure on this new crop of DB's by blitzing so much. We seem to be playing a heavy zone blitz scheme which can work if the pressure gets there fast enough. However, BCU's offensive coordinator was able to take what he saw in film and dissect us underneath. We are leaving 3-5 in coverage which exposes the hard flats and middle of the field which the BCU QB used very well when feeling the pressure.

If the defense is to work, the pressure needs to amount to multiple sacks/TFL or at least containment when the pocket collapses. We saw neither today. In the first drive we blitzed way too much on obvious running downs and failed to keep contain. The DB's looked lost all game and if they had a QB with a good arm we would have been shredded far worse.

I hope changes are made and we run a more vanilla 4-3 base man defense next week, Ark State has to be licking their chops on the underneath game.

Agreed, I thought at times he was just better off going with a four man rush. A lot of the pressures he brought opened up the flat for huge gains

I hear the "playing a team like BC", HOWEVER we should be playing to our standards, not the level of the opponent.
Pretty underwhelming performance

Definitely some work to do, I expect to see some serious improvement next week

I thought Rumph said during camp that the defense was going to be playing mostly press man coverage this season. What the **** happened to that?

Bend but don't break bullsh*t with some soft a55 off coverage against Bethune...

It funny how we all laughed at the comment a coach made about the defense being to gimmicky. Welp it doesn't seem like they were talking out of their butt after all. There is film on our defense now from today and last season so I think more people will do exactly what BCU did to us from here on out to exploit it. If Manny can't adjust now that people know his tendencies and style he won't be here long. He need to cut down on the random blitzing when we have a good defensive line, he need to get the LB to spread out closer to the slot WR so it not 1 CB vs 2 blockers on screens, and better outside containment.

We can dissect things all we want, but fact is the DL did not live up to the hype. No sugar coating it, Cookman's OL handled our ballyhooed DL.

The Linebackers looked worse than the DL. The entire defense looked slow, but the linebackers looked especially slow

Malek Young should start over that Delaney kid. #3 looked way too slow to be starting at Miami as a CB.

Our problem is our safeties way to slow

And they took bad angles all day...I understand that Carter wasn't great in coverage last year and that he whiffed on tackles at times, but for the most part he took proper angles and owned the box. Jenkins was great at free last season. We are missing these 2 guys badly right now and of course Corn.

I'll give Diaz vs Ark St to fix what I saw today. If Ark St. shreds us then may as well delcare him Dorito 2.0...Saw absolutely NONE of the hype we heard about in the off season. Sick to my stomach watching the replay as we speak.

At the end of the day this is UM. As a DB you are expected to be able to play man to man.

We should never watch saturdays with other teams having the dbs that we r suppose to have........now they cannot afford to lose Jobe Hall or Tyson or it will be the most epic fail in recruiting in a long time. Well we been failing for years so maybe not a long time but still there from sfla they should be wearing our jersey

Naw bro. Carter is/was trash. Jenkins was solid though.
