Since my truck has been broke down for the last two days, I had the opportunity to watch some old 'Canes games, while I was waiting.

A common thread is comparing new Miami QB's to old ones.

After watching a few games, I was surprised to see the similarities between Gino Torreta and Malik Rosier.

Both were streaky, unafraid to throw into double coverage, winners and good arms, particularly on the over-the-shoulder throws.

Not pretty. But they ARE winners. Gino does seem to get a bit more help from his WR's though.

Give you an idea:

Gino Torreta - 1991 Season

205/371
55.3%
3,095 yards
20 TDs
8 INT's

Malik Rosier - 2017 Season

143/252
56.7%
2071 Yards
17 TD's
4 INT's

Malik on track to have a similar season Gino did in '91.

Interesting, both teams had no running game and remember Gino had very little mobility. Also, Gino had one helluva Defense.

Well... the '91 Team had a marginally better run game, but you are correct; Gino sure had a heck of a lot of help with that defense. Malik had better wheels, but Gino had the ability to scramble a bit and keep the play alive a bit longer.

In the case of both the '91 and '17 team, the defense was the better unit.

The question is, will our defense in '17 hold up?

The difference is the 91 defense was by far and away the best in the country.

IIRC that unit allowed less than ten points a game....

This defense would too if our offense was more efficient

I wouldn't go THAT far, that unit was extremely sound(even without huge d-tackles upfront) and the Bermuda Triangle was incredible and Darryl Williams at FS was as good at being a centerfielder as you could ask. He's a bit forgotten because of guys like Reed and Taylor but he was great at Miami in his own right.

Gino is one of my favorite all time Canes I felt he was the master at getting hit while completing a pass. Stats are nice but Malik is no Gino.

I wasn't talking about talent wise but efficiency wise they would. They suffer because of how many snaps they're on the field for, I wouldn't be surprised if they're top 20 in snaps played.

Had the pleasure of watching Gino in the OB and at a couple of away games. At the time I was surprised when he won the Heisman, but he had amazing passing numbers in 91 and 92, and he was the nicest guy around. He also had a stellar OL with Searcy and Cristobal and others. His defenses had names like Sapp, Barrow, Armstead, Medearis... basically a wall.
I still feel that Malik can (and must) improve his numbers, especially in third down conversions. Also I feel that the play calling is somewhat anemic, and isn't helping his numbers.

I've seen quite a few of those from Malik. One of them was a TD dime to Berrios. Can't remember which game.

This is a good comparison. While different athletes, they had similar passing abilities and leadership skills.

F*uck Lunchmeat Tech!!!

Hopefully he does not throw a ball to Thomas only to have the ball stripped away from him by a Bama safety in the Sugar Bowl.

Wait, that was '92.

We'll be fine.

Relax. That 91 D was nasty and dominating. I wouldn’t define our D in that category. UNC gets shut out vs. that 91’ Defense. Doesn’t get close to 250 yards.

Game is totally different today than 25 years ago though.

Completing fewer than 60% of your passes in 2017 is considered inaccurate.
