Major Applewhite: The art of failing forward

Who are the available “cutting edge” guys?

We could get some Air Raid disciple from the Sun Belt or something that’s only called plays for a year or two, but that’s no guarantee.

We could get a guy who’s held clipboards for Art Briles or Mike Like Leach or Lincoln Riley.

That’s no guarantee, either.

I’m open to names, but I just don’t see any slam dunks.

probably been said before... manny's first HC job - starting at a major and demanding school (and fanbase) may be a tuff and perhaps lonely (at the top) adventure. an experienced HC buddy on staff who may know the HC ropes so to speak is probably a comfort and if it influenced his selection i'm not sure we should mind. maybe use the guy as a sounding board for ideas he's working out.

no highly successful current OC at a major is going to make a lateral OC move to Miami, so if it wasn't a small school rising-star OC, it was a gonna be a HC-falling-star. maybe he was a mediocre OC back in the day, but add the HC experiences to his resume he really should bring it

Ask Manny that question. He was the guy at the press conference that stated he had 4 great OC prospects that we’re cutting edge. I had visions of a group of dynamic guys that were offensive wizards, but instead we get Applewhite. What???

When you set the bar that high at your press conference you can’t trot out Major Applewhite as your leading candidate. A guy that’s failed, has been fired, and has been mediocre far more than he’s succeeded. C’mon, let’s be real. It’s a MAJOR letdown (pun intended)

How does this man do it? What is his secret? Has there ever been a college coach that’s failed forward more the Applewhite?

Mediocre offenses at texas
Fired from Alabama
Mediocre offenses at Houston as OC
Fired as HC at Houston

All this fail, yet somehow this man keeps getting jobs and he’s now the leading OC candidate at Miami, after being fired last week??? It’s not going to work, because he’s not that good at anything except failing forward.

C’mon, Manny...we deserve better...the players deserve a cutting edge OC you promised. Applewhite ain’t it!

I love that people lIke OP write garbage like this, then claim we should hire Canada or Sark.

Houston has had a really good offense the past 4 years. Applewhite was OC or HC for all of it.

So he was fired at Bama? Diaz was fired at Texas. Who cares. His recent performance has been very good.

This actually makes sense.

This sounds like the Mark Richt hire all over again. We had a vocal minority showing you all the obvious and telling you Richt was a bad hire - was mediocre based on results, but the majority was so caught up in the name and lathered up for something new and shiny they chose to ignore facts right in front of them.

I told you all Richt was a not the guy and I’m now telling you all Applewhite is not what we want at Miami. He doesn’t have an innovative mind and he’s a mediocre play caller

Uh, you also trashed the Diaz as DC hire. And you were completely wrong.

Honestly, I think you'd be against whoever the hire is. You've *****ed about every single one so far

The smart folks wanted Herman when we hired Richt. (The less intelligent wanted Butch) We’d have creamed our pants if Herman came with Major in 2016. However, because Major wasn’t a great HC, in 2019 we have folks acting like we hired Jon Richt to run our offense

That’s because Herman was the brains of the operations. He was successful everywhere he went as an OC and coach. Applewhite, on the other hand failed forward and was basically Herman’s Hype man. Applewhite was Flava Flav to Herman’s Chuck D

I was wrong on that. I Didn’t like the Diaz hire as our DC.

What other hires have I *****ed at? Educate me on it

Weird how the offense stayed good after Herman left

Someone from OUs staff, someone from Purdue’s staff, Syracuse....Princeton’s OC

Oh, so you dont actually know.

Oklahoma- Lincoln Riley is the OC
Purdue- Brohm is the OC
Syracsuse- Babers is the OC
Princeton- Uh, what? I'm sure you've even seen them play

You're just delusional and you seem to not know much about actual OC options

All these negative posts are making me feel good. I've come to learn that the majority is usually wrong on here lol Most were happy about the idea of Richt calling plays and also hated the Manny hire. 3 years later, Richt is out and Manny is our HC. Not a single person would have believed that 3 years ago.

Now Apple white is trash according to many on here. I expect him to exceed expectations and there will be a lot of crow eating.
