Mack Brown

Personally, I hope they keep Mack around for as long as he wants to be around.

I actually think UNC will take football quite seriously in the post-Mack era because of realignment conversations and the need to position themselves as a winner. The have the resources to be a legitimate NIL competitor and the Carolinas + DMV area is pretty fertile recruiting grounds.

I don't view them as national title contenders or a true threat to us if Mario's momentum continues. But I can see them overtaking Louisville + NC State and making FSU + Clemson sweat it as the 2nd best team in the ACC.

You don’t get the hate? Yes you do. You just don’t want to.

He left the roster devoid of talent because he sucked at recruiting. The few star recruits he got were me-first players. He crashed the FSU event, which would’ve been cool if we won games. We became a side show with turnover chains and TD rings instead of moving the chains and championship rings. He ruined the culture here which has taken three years to fix.

You don’t have to hate the guy, but let’s not pretend that you don’t know where the hate comes from. It’s pretty obvious.
I think the point though is that Manny THOUGHT that’s what he needed to be doing. He wasn’t trying to actively destroy the culture, he was doing what he thought was best - he just didn’t know better, because he was lacking experience. He should never have been hired and that is on Blake James and also Shalala too for putting James into an AD position.

Edit: I don’t see the point in “hating” a person for trying. I do hate Golden, however. He had bad intentions IMO.

That’s fair but I’ve heard too many **** recruiting stories about Manny. Granted they are stories, but reliable ones.

I cannot believe we do not have UNC on the schedule this year. Maybe Mack is nervous that it’s a certainty Manny gets his long awaited revenge this Saturday and holds him against his will after the game.
Its just what Manny Diaz corched teams do to other teams.

Placing blame on those who hired Manny does not absolve Manny of his share of blame.

Did he turn a blind eye at what and how Richt was doing for the years prior? Crashing another schools event? Bush league. Not offering Ray Ray cuz he didn’t think we had a chance? Bush league. Allowing players to treat X like a POS cuz he was a try hard? Bush league. Did he actively try to ruin the culture? Probably not but it still happened on his watch, in large part because of things he did and did not do.

I’m good with pointing a finger at Blake James et al, but Manny doesn’t get a pass. No way.

I will trust that you have more information then. I wasn’t on these boards back then, so I don’t know. I just thought he was clueless. You think he was underhanded?

I don’t think underhanded is the right word. Just inept and way too arrogant. So it wasn’t to me like he was trying hard and failing, like you’re saying that can be an admirable thing. Just coming off like an arrogant dbag to high school players and coaches

Macho used to say it was recruiting amateur hour under Manny and no one wanted to hear it.

Yeah, like I said above, it sounds like there’s a lot of stuff I am not aware of. The guy is a douche, no doubt, and I’m glad he’s not our coach. Always seemed to me like he cared more about being the cool teacher that kids liked than anything else. I think he is the reason the Peter Principle was created.

I’m not quite sure what we are debating though. I’m not absolving Manny of any blame. Just said there was a difference between someone is actively trying to destroy the program and someone who is hugely incompetent. And I don’t think Manny was trying to destroy anything. I think he’s a spoiled nepobaby with an overinflated ego who never played football himself but wants to be one of the cool kids. And he shouldn’t have been in the position to be in his first HC position at Miami (I don’t think he’s cut out to be a HC anyway, but we will see), but that’s Shalala’s and James’s doing.

💯

A place like UM (or Oklahoma or Florida or any of these top tier schools) should never have a coach learning on-the-job for his first head coaching job. It drives me crazy that any keep trying. It should be illegal.
It has worked out pretty well for Oklahoma with Stoops and then Riley. We will see about Venables. UGA is also doing well with their first time head coach.

I do remember that now that you say it. Should probably just let him handle this one but I remember it being a common theme

This - "he just didn’t know better"

Yes he did. You don't need experience as the HC to know not to crash another school's recruiting event. You don't need HC experience to know tha you don't tolerate guys taking practices off. You don't need HC experience to know that recruiting is all about effort. He was a coordinator under Richt. I assume Manny's eyes and ears work, therefore there was a fairly large sample size for himi to soak up. But that didn't happen. When you put a hefty coating of arrogance over the top of it all, it leads to the fans (of which I am one) hating him. Pretty simple.

Oh nah. You got see me in the middle of the field for 5 minutes. At that point, putting away the collar shirt and Durag Dees Brown is coming out.

To be honest, it's a fade on sight everytime after this. It can be in the produce section at publix, I giving mack a good ol'fashion Grade A *** whipping.

Most men show each other a level of respect, because there is always a threat of low level violence if you cross certain boundaries. **** like this, yea Mack is ready to meet his maker.

Manny Diaz was practically a tragic Greek figure with a sealed fate. With no real football pedigree and his dad being a mayor, it was a combo of silk pajamas and imposter syndrome. He did try, but it takes a larger-than-life persona and personal gravitas to succeed as a HC here, and he was never that. That's why I harbor no ill-will against the guy.

On topic, UNC should've been grooming or looking for an HC in waiting since the Brown hire if the AD was serious about football. How many years did they think they would get out of a **** fossil?
Manny and Randy were the exact same hire, namely, a DC on the staff of a team in decline.

While there's no reason not to retain them as DC, you don't offer them the HC job. It's total lunacy to hire from a declining regime (even moreso when you're making him a first time HC).

Both hires were lazy and insane.

I am completely ambivalent about Manny. But I'd love to see him put up a huge score and shutout UNC. Because I'm not ambivalent about that.
