I always go back and forth about how much good QB play factors into a team/coach success and then I look at UNC this season as an example. Shows me that there is no NIL limit when it comes to game changing QB play. You pay whatever it takes if you want to be a winner.
This is why I wanted Nico that first cycle I thought he was that good of a QB and now look at Tennessee. He completely changed the direction of that program.

Nailed it. It was an awful hire, but as I said at the time, if that was going to be the decision, then everyone better prepare themselves for a steep learning curve. He didnt do a lot of things well, but not many coaches go right into their first coaching gig and nail it. Cristobal’s first tenure didn’t end so well either.

Diaz looked like he was slowly learning from mistakes . First season he went pro style, then next season he was the first UM coach to move UM from "pro-style” to a spread offense. It was a massive improvement. But he would not have time to learn everything he needed to know at UM. Expectations were unrealistic given his lack of experience, but it’s UM and thats how it goes.

Smart move would have been to decline the UM HC offer and stay at Temple to learn where it’s not a pressure cooker, and then if he was successful there then maybe one day he’d have a shot to be an experienced, successful coach at UM. But I can’t blame the guy- if UM offers then you take the job, even if you don’t have the qualifications yet.

Seems to have worked pretty well for everyone though. Diaz only spent a couple years as a DC before getting the Duke job. He could be the HC at Duke forever. They will be ecstatic and crown him if he manages to win 8-9 games a season. We got Cristobal, who went to Saban coaching rehab and then showed what he learned at Oregon, and he’s turned UM into one of the best teams in the country.

Ultimately though, I don’t get the hate for the dude. He wasn’t qualified for the UM job but he got offered the job anyways , he did the best he could do but it wasn’t nearly good enough. He was a big part of the 2017 season that was the lone bright spot for UM in years (the defense carried that team). He has my appreciation for that.
Manny can get all the xp he wants he sucks at recruiting and that right there will never get you to a sustainable dominant build. He will always be mediocre it’s that simple. Can he have some good seasons? What HC can’t? But perennial top 5 team? Never happening

Lots of long tenured sports coaches at UNC have stepped down in the last year. I think it's his turn at seasons end.

They gave up 70 (and scored 50!) against JMU, my guy. I don't think QB play is their problem.

After Manny let that previous disrespect slide, I think the only way to make his honor whole is to rush the middle of the field like Jorge Masvidal did to Ben Askren and land a lucky flying knee. It’s either that or forever shame.

You don’t get the hate? Yes you do. You just don’t want to.

He left the roster devoid of talent because he sucked at recruiting. The few star recruits he got were me-first players. He crashed the FSU event, which would’ve been cool if we won games. We became a side show with turnover chains and TD rings instead of moving the chains and championship rings. He ruined the culture here which has taken three years to fix.

You don’t have to hate the guy, but let’s not pretend that you don’t know where the hate comes from. It’s pretty obvious.

I cannot believe we do not have UNC on the schedule this year. Maybe Mack is nervous that it’s a certainty Manny gets his long awaited revenge this Saturday and holds him against his will after the game.
I just saw your Canesinsight member name. I have been on here a while and must have missed it. "Dixie Normous" might be, if not is, the greatest member name since "Ron Mexico". That alone should get you into the Canesinsight hall of fame. Well done.

Understandable

What Manny did to us from a recruiting standpoint took 3 years to fix and I kinda hate him for it still

I don't hate him over that fact.
I do hate Blake and the mini Cartel who hired him after Coach Richt stepped down.
The folks who engineered that hire suck and I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same batch of idiots who have destroyed our baseball program.

Yeah it’s kinda like people hating some of our players that just really had no business being on the field. I’m like well I blame the coaches for how bad they are and not being able to recruit better

💯

A place like UM (or Oklahoma or Florida or any of these top tier schools) should never have a coach learning on-the-job for his first head coaching job. It drives me crazy that any keep trying. It should be illegal.
