Lucas Injury?

i know we all roll our eyes at the injury stuff with this program but listening to Mario, that’s a very long term injury. My guess is coin flip at best if we see him at least through the next couple months. I’m not really sure what you can do to your shoulder via impact that’s a 4+ month injury but I’m operating under the assumption he’s out for the year and if we’re really lucky, he returns for the playoffs.

This is bad, bad, bad. He’s our best cover corner, full stop. If the pass rush is going to be a tick slower, the last thing you want is your best cover corner out.

It’s also now completely imperative everyone else in that room stays healthy, and we’re exactly one game into the season. Antione is already hurt. Lucas definitely had something going on, I guess we’ll see. Obviously we could play with Fraggle at corner on Thursday and win by 70. But Wake has some actual receivers. I’m not worried, obviously. We can score 50 on them if we need to. But this puts that room on thin ice once we get later in the year. Pitt can throw it. ND, obviously. The playoffs.

Honestly, i had OJ in my Top 10 guys we couldn’t afford to lose for the year. And that might be too low if Antoine is also out long-term.

And before anyone calls me a *****, I’m not worried about the ACC. OJ doesn’t even come close to moving the needle as far as ACC odds. But I’m here to win 3 games in the playoffs. He absolutely impacts that. If you disagree, go put the Indiana game on again.
If he has a torn labrum, then that’s what would have him out for a very long time for. Depends on the extent of the tear.

It’s possible it was already slightly torn, he had been playing through it and didn’t know (what happened to me; both shoulders) then one bad pull/separation leads to imaging that shows the extent of the tear. Rehabbing and playing thru it is an option but each shoulder pull/separation leads to a bigger tear and more frequent shoulder dislocations.

Shoulder injuries are very weird to deal with. Guessing he will have surgery given how Mario is talking about it being longterm.

Definitely sounded like a surgery situation.

I had torn cartilage in my shoulder and bone spurs cleaned out in early October. when i was a teenager many many years ago I broke, separated, and dislocated my shoulder (trifecta!) Never had surgery but once I got to my 40s my shoulder would freeze in place and I couldn't lift my arm. But the surgery cleaned up the bone spurs and made extra space for the scar tissue to essentially act as substitute cartilage. I would say I had complete mobility and strength back in about 4 weeks. I'm guessing a young player could heal a lot faster than a dude in his late 40s.

If Lucas is out for extended period we are screwed. Unvelievable we talk about S&C and Big Erv, and the CB room is depleted and we have only played 1 game.

Next Man up people say, but you are operating under the assumption the next man up doesnt get hurt.

See Antone and O'Connor were next man up behind O.J. and Lucas, and see how that is going?

Can obviously still easily win the ACC scoring 50 a game. But that ND game is another story. I’m sure I’ll get lit up for saying this but, if any of these guys are 50/50 going into that game, sit them. Your job is to win the ACC and get an auto bid. It’s not to beat ND and potentially lose guys for the rest of the year/playoffs.

Well expect alot of shootouts least we have the offense for it .. another great Qb wit no secondary 🤦

If Lucas’ injury is as rumored, it’s not a strength and conditioning issue. It’s just something that happens when you play tackle football. Again, it’s just a rumor for now and who really knows bc people seem to speculate about anything, but don’t think this would speak to our preparation at all.

We’re going to have baptize our young DBs in the fire. Better to have this knowledge now so they can gain the experience required while the older guys who are also nicked up heal up; even in the unlikely scenario OJ da juiceman can return during the postseason.

I was a big fan of Ryan Mack the recruit. He has a lot of experience at cornerback so won’t be too much for him to change positions. I’d put him at cornerback before JJ just because JJ is so integral as a safety for us this year and the next two. We additionally have Dylan Day and Isaiah Taylor who are vets at safety too.

Chris Ewald took-over CB1 from Deangelo Ponds guarding p4 WRs (J. Smith, Koby Howard, Jansen Lopez, Jojo, D. Gray at UK, D. Thomas at UCF) in practice everyday. Was excited about him as a recruit too.

Mack and Ewald are the two guys we’re going to be relying most on, imo. Much more than the three freshmen; still, feel Will Harris will get them all up to speed quickly. I think they’ll keep Portis playing primarily nickel so Brody Jennings and Seatbelt Waters will log a lot of snaps as we move forward w/ until there’s clarity on Lucas + Antoine. It seemed like Portis was further along than Brody and Seatbelt by the end of fall camp.

JJ wouldn’t move to corner. He’d be a vital Safety piece now and still a freshman, so we’d more likely see Bryce in an emergency corner role. Again, who knows. Let’s see how it plays out.

Yeah it mos def depends on what and where he tore it at. However, it is noticeable that Mario differentiated between Antoine who’ll, “be back for the latter half of the season,” and OJ w/, “it’s a pretty significant injury, so he will be out for quite a while of time.”

So is anyone not expected to come back this year? Hope we can still be full strength by playoffs

Yeup. Thursday night certainly got more interesting.

I believe the wise course of thought with both is there’s no need to rush back and Lucas will be a full go at latest when we travel to Clemson.

Crazy how everyone keeps talking about the playoffs. Team has to win 11 games first. If they drop 2 games again it’s a wrap for any playoff talk.

1 game at a time. Ppl are waaay too out over their skis about playoffs and guys coming back at the end of the year.

I say it that way as I think most can agree it’ll be our first test. Don’t care how they looked against LSU
