We had to watch a Lou Holtz talk at work, years ago. I hated every moment of it, he will always be the enemy. But he said one thing that stuck with me - the way to motivate people is to get rid of the unmotivated.

When he said the Notre Dame spirit beat Miami I wanted to punch his stupid face.I'll never get over that Cleveland Gary call

I can't lie, I didn't like him because he coached at a program that I despise and, also, I think he never
missed an opportunity to give UM a cheap shot.
However, he was one heck of a coach and as a person he was a standup guy.
I remember on the eve of an Orange Bowl game against a very talented Oklahoma, he suspended three of his stars, yet he somehow whipped the Sooners.
He was a master motivator.
I also remember his stint at UofMinnesota when his QB from South Carolina learned of his Mom's passing. He paid for the kid's flight home to be with his family, which got him in trouble with the NCAA.
He didn't care as he was looking out for his player.
So, yeah, much respect for him.
RIP.

It’s not just that Holtz was a coach at a hated rival. There’s been plenty of those over the years. It’s that he spent his entire post Notre Dame career trashing Miami. He held a big *** grudge decades after the rivalry had pretty much gone away. There’s no mutual respect like Bobby Bowden. Bobby didn’t like us but he respected us. Holtz was a hater to the core. I won’t say I’m happy but I’m not sad.

Finally, someone speaks truth at a challenging time.

I had a big problem with Holtz feeding into all the Miami hatred when he was coaching. In his role and with his power, he could have done something meaningful to end "Catholics vs. Convicts" epithets.

And I also didn't appreciate Holtz continuing to refer to Cleveland Gary's NON-fumble as a fumble. The refs screwed up, thinking it was 4th and goal instead of 4th and 7 from the 11, and Holtz would never own up to that.

Ah, guy was a hater & coached against us in some of the biggest rivalry games. Went to his grave holding a grudge. That said, feel for his family & the loss of an interesting character in our program’s history, even if he was a villain.
