Looks like SJ is starting at guard

If he spent 4–5 hours on an off day just nonstop snapping the football, he’d probably get pretty good at it. I’m not trying to be mean, but is snapping really that difficult if you spend a couple hours learning? Or is he having trouble adjusting to blocking post-snap?

I'm obviously not there to work with him, but honestly, sometimes you get the yips. Again, I have no idea if this is happening, but I agree with you...this really isn't that hard. I would venture to guess if their intention is to have him play Center and he just cannot because he can't snap the ball, it's mental at this point. Rick Ankiel, Bill Blass before that. Sometimes guys just get a mental block and can't perform a simple physical task that they could otherwise do in their sleep. Maybe it's that?

If the 4-5 hours include a 300 pound man pushing him in his chest as soon as he lets the ball go then maybe

This offensive line unit competition is still ongoing. If SJ gets the first drive against Stanford, that's great. However, we'll probably see one of the other guys 1-2 drives later. I suspect there will be a lot of rotation tomorrow night.
Sun like Samson & McCoy did last year at LG

i'm starting to think sj is a bad **** ... has to be to still be in the race
I have caution with his size but i have said it plenty of times his high school tape is elite elite, so i wouldn’t be surprised if he can be an outlier

This could mean we’re doing more in the run game because if we want to run what we usually run then cantwell, Congdon, max would be clear

I’ll say this, he’s got the wingspan of a 6’4 player and his arguably the strongest person on the team. Just because he’s on the shorter end people forget he was the number one inside offensive lineman recruit in the country the year he came out. So if he’s earned it, he’s earned it. We’ll see if he can keep it now because when it comes to run blocking, he’s excellent, now he’s got to prove he doesn’t get swallowed up in pass blocking.
If he’s got the arm length then his height is far less of a concern. His weight would be more the issue but his low center of gravity and superior strength should mitigate any of the concerns regarding 15 lbs of mass. If he’s as strong and long as a dude who is 6’4 320 I’m less concerned about him being short and hair light. Especially if we are getting him on the move as a puller often. I’d imagine our biggest concern for him would be in pass pro but if he’s got good feet nd balance and long arms he ought a be good to go

The first 2 jobs of a center are snap the ball, 3 is to set the protection and 4 is to BLOCK SOME BODEE. He'll be a fine guard, but you can't play C if you can't snap.
I'd be curious to know if it's still a snap issue or is it the mental side. Part of the reason they portal'd the first few years is you need experience at center. Much easier to play guard/tackle from a mental standpoint.

Back to the point on snapping, I wonder how far along they are with deadball snaps lol. Alot of kids find that much easier than the conventional shotgun snap.
I figure they’ll get him as many game reps at Center as they can this year in hopes he can take over the job in ‘27. If not, they’ll probably go portal for a center. And if he has an outstanding year at guard, they should just leave him there anyway.

if Mario thought he was too short, he wouldn't be here. I am not the best on OL stuff but that kid's hs tape looks elite. I rarely ever notice an OL guy in clips like that. I am willing to see what he has to offer. he was ranked the top interior lineman last year.

and having to block in a scheme, sports aren't 1 coactive, they're 4.

I think people forget that SJ was a top interior line prospect in his class. He’s been in the program for a while now and we lose that perspective of him as a prospect. We pigeonholed him into center. I want my line guys to look a certain way too but if he’s the best player, then he’s the best player and he deserves this.

rotation against the stanford starting def is important to benchmarking and comparing apples to apples when grading out. They will rotate the 4 guards (SJ, Cantwell, Congdon, Max) up until the Clemson game - and settle on who the best 5 are after a sample from Stanford, FA&M, Central Michigan and Wake Forest.

Don't sleep on Cantwell slowly taking over the RT spot and pushing McCoy inside
