What would be best for this program?

While I get that a coach leaving after 5 or so years preferably voluntarily for an NFL job is viewed as a good thing since it would mean that he would have won big, I think right now what this program need is someone that views this as a long term and will not leave after finding success. The only coaches I see sticking for the long haul is Butch. I sometimes wonder what would have been if coaches like Schellenberger, JJ or Butch would have stayed longer than they did. We'd have like 10+ MNC's.
Herman would bolt the minute he gets this team to a BCS playoff bowl game.
Chud and Schiano would as well as I can see Chud still wanting to be a HC in the NFL and Schiano waiting for the PSU job to eventually open up.
Strong would look to get back to the SEC as will Mario after having spent a few years coaching there.

However Butch would likely see this as his retirement job where he'll be firmly stay put for 10+ years after rebuilding the dynasty he never got to finish.

So you want a guy to come here and not be good enough to go anywhere else, or not be motivated to be better? Sounds like the worst idea imaginable.

I just want a winner. If he's weird enough to stay here and win NCs through the years, cool. If he leaves for the NFL in 5 years, go for it.

Butch Davis is the best choice.

All of the extraneous variables are just that, extraneous.

Butch Davis FTW!

The best fit for the program is a coach who can get it done - winning championships...

Since it'd be unlikely that that person would hang around for a long time, it'd be nice for him to have a successor on staff...

This sometimes works out. Chip Kelly was the OC for a couple years under Bellotti at Oregon...Bellotti did a solid job turning Oregon into a competitor and Kelly kicked it up a notch during his short tenure there....

This time around Butch is too old for more than 5 or so years. I think he intends to solidify the recruiting, build another monster, win his own NC, and retire into the sunset with young successor in place. I am happy if he builds another monster. As to long term coach, I am not big fan of them for THE U. Look at Bobby at FSU. Like 30 years and TWO NCs? Come on, how long would that float here. Or the old boy lover at PSU. What a 100 years and like 4 titles. Larry took us to two NCs, won one and got cheated out of another -- who wasn't ready fro him to get fired a couple years BEFORE he did. Finding the right guy every 4 or 5 years is hard but I doubt we have any choice. Lifers will never keep us happy.

We need to be that step to NFL an aggressive coach uses. BUT that coach must be able to continue Miami recruiting and not try changing our dna to suit his fancy. If could UHealth could clone another Butch every 5 years to reload us, then we could flood the NFL with our coaches. If not then we need to find a special coach like Howard or JJ every 5 years, or one with the right assistants, to carry on. I think coaches run their race and need to move on.

Urban just changes schools and conferences. He is smart. I think he will be at ND in 3 or 4 years as his next stop. Saban had great run at Bama. Maybe he gets another title, maybe not. You can already see the slow down. Jimbo look like he had build a monster capable of repeating -- but what happened to all those top classes -- his whole team is one player now. (Imagine if Butch had been here to take Cook!) The noles might keep Jimbo for 30 years like Bobby -- unless that taste of NCs has made them like us, in which case he is already heading to thin ice.

Given Butch's age and his less than stellar time with the Browns, you'd have to think he would be a UM lifer.

You don't come here to be a lifer. You go to a Bumfuk college town where the team is the center of the universe and your career aspirations have maxed out. We'd be horribly mistaken to ever look for a guy like that. Making sure he doesn't have a "dream" college job somewhere or would be using us an extreme short term stepping stone (ie Kiffin re: Tenn & USC) is a different story.

I think Butch is the only lifer we can attract. And, that's by special circumstance (age and previous tenure). Otherwise, this is an extremely attractive job for someone on the move to the NFL. A guy like Tom Herman might be attracted if his goal is to eventually get to the NFL as a HC. He's already complained about lack of attendance at Houston. It won't get any better here. I think long-term guys might be put off by lack of fan support. Short term, maybe it's not a factor.

i mean having top notch guys that leave to the league after 4 years is cool, but the truth is, i'd prefer a top notch guy who know he wants to be a college coach... we may not have the bama/texas "advantages" .... but what we do offer is opportunity to win national championships.

It doesn't matter...

If they don't win they are going to be out anyways....

Just give me a guy who can win 11-12 games and compete for NCs while setting forth a foundation that can continue after he leaves whenever that'll be... Thats All...

If he can do that... who give **** how long he's here
