Local Five-star WR Calvin Russell talks being a 'hometown hero' and recaps official visit

What has Calvin's production been for the 2025 season?
not sure he probably played in like 7 games. he probably has around 9-10 tds.

they just beat their 1st week play off team 70-0. He threw for 3 tds in the game at qb.

tape against two of the better teams on schedule.

he had a 17 yd touch down against Miami Central as well.

Accepting that the staff swung and missed on Russell, are you happy about the guys they did get? How do the bigs (Wingo, Parris and presumably Evans) compare to Russell in your opinion?

Once we landed Wingo i was ecstatic.

Parris committing sets it off even more as we need more height other than Josh Moore. Spafford when healthy slots to the mali toney spot.

Evans im now ho hum on. I love the wr class though.

cj russell does most of his work out of the slot which ppl dont really realize. So comparing him to other bigs is difficult. He actually fits that syracuse offense.

the local guy if i was bein greedy would be J Roc Lopez for him being a slot type and a flip from our biggest rival.

MNW is 9-0. Why has he only played in 7 games? If he was injured for a couple of games, that impacts things.

While some folks like yourself know all the ins and outs of these players, I guarantee you that 247/on3/ESPN or whoever DO NOT. They just see the stats. I did not cite his statistics to JUSTIFY why his ranking has dropped, but to EXPLAIN why it dropped.

Perhaps Russell has been better in certain games than others. Perhaps Russell has done some Malachi-like passing in some games. While we may know this, he still doesn't have eye-popping numbers at WR. He's not even in the Top 200 in Florida for receiving yardage.

Again, I'm not knocking his situation. I'm on the record as wanting Russell to come to UM. But if people are trying to understand how a Top 30 recruit drops into the 200-300 range, it frequently happens when the senior year stats are not as gaudy. A kid may still be very talented, but maybe OTHER seniors look better (at least during senior year).

I'm fine with taking Calvin Russell. I disagree with people who think that "drops in the rankings" for guys like Russell and Cooper is some sort of "validation" of the UM staff's "scouting". In fact, I agreed with your post about UM continuing to recruit Cooper. So on the balance, you and I are in agreement.

But like it or not, some of the recruiting services start to downgrade a top player who doesn't have a great senior season. Not all the time, but sometimes.

he was hurt for a few.

He hasnt played qb much maybe 2 games in blow outs when they sit their qb. But he put up solid numbers for about 400 passing and a few tds in the games.

Mnw has multiple div 1 wrs to throw the ball too so his numbers never was gonna be extremly high and they blow teams out so.

Let him go to Cuse and see what he has...his frame is thin.. he needs s&c...the thing i like about russell is his touhness and his ability out of breaks at his height. But this was never a JJ Smith elite type. The next one of those appears to be Brysen Wright out of Jacksonville.

CJ teammate Nick Lennear should be a priority and he reminds me of Jcolby George.

perfect for him then he slides in the kiyan anthony role.

they barely beat monmouth tonight
And to be fair, he did struggle tonight and they haven't played anyone really yet. So let me not say Kiyan is "definitely" leaving but most Syracuse fans are saying so lol.

But yeah I think Syracuse is a better fit for Russell regardless. Basketball and football. I'm actually off the hate train for Russell now because he is a talented kid. Feel both parties just moved on.

The Miami Hurricanes are looking to end the misery of losing elite skill position talents from South Florida, and one of their main targets is five-star WR Calvin Russell. A Miami Northwestern product, the 6-foot-5 pass catcher also picked up an offer on the court from Jai Lucas as Miami looks to pull all the strings to keep him home. This will be a battle all the way until his July 5th commitment date and beyond, and I was able to catch up with him following his official visit. Here’s what Russell had to say:

Overall Recap from his visit:

“It was a nice visit. I got to know Miami a bit better, had a decent amount of fun, a decent bit of information. It was a great visit.”

“I really got to see the more versatile part of the program, like its fun and business at the same time.”

“I definitely feel better about Miami.”

On the staffs pitch to stay in Miami & his relationship with Malachi Toney:

“That this is home, like this is where I gotta be.”

“Mali’s my brother, so it's like, he wants me to be in the best place for myself. He definitely let me know, like if we together, we’re gonna push each other a lot.
We're gonna push each other till we can't push each other no more.”

On the basketball side of his recruitment:

“[Basketball] is important in my decision, so we definitely talked about it. We got things right, and that's how it's going.”

(Mentioned wherever he’s going he will be playing basketball as well)

“I talked to coach Lucas. We sat down, and we had a talk. It was like everything went hand in hand, so it wasn't really a problem.”

On his recruiting process and timeline:

“Just going through the process and when I get done with my OV’s I’ll think about it more.”

“Oregon definitely made a great impression,
Miami, LSU as well. I’m looking for who’s genuine and got a great plan for me and it's gonna help me push myself and take care of my family.

“After I commit, everything is all about ball.”

On what it would mean to stay in Miami to play for the U:

“Oh, it would mean a lot, 'cause I know I could be a neighborhood hero. I know the whole of Miami would love me, Miami got my back, so I feel that would mean a lot.”
Scares me when he said “ like this is were I gotta be “

Sounds awful close to dream school.

Saying all this and no commitment HMMM hope he’s not trying to attract HUGE DESK type bag 💼.

Monmouth played Seton Hall tough last week too. True college bball junkie here.

Die hard STH Johnnie fan here...

Cuse and "The Hall" suck lots of *****.

LOL, last season I made the mistake of traveling up to Syracuse to watch the abomination of a game we played.

Walking into the game, a fan was giving me some **** about my Canes jacket. It was all fun and games. When I mentioned that I'm a St. John's fan as well, you had to see his mug. Whole disposition changed. Thought he wanted to throw hands for a second, haha

In fairness to Monmouth, they are a decent program.

I'll get to see St John's and The Hall this season when they visit Creighton.
