I was young, stupid, single and multilingual, and a company hired me to do international audit with promises of travel to London, Paris, Rome, etc.

My very first assignment was to audit a huge rubber plantation deep in the Liberian jungle. Had to get multiple shots for awful diseases, malaria pills, etc. Lots of snakes, scorpions, and many other nasties, had to constantly check the bed, shoes, etc.. No electricity, running water, etc. Lost probably 20 pounds in a month from not eating and constantly sweating.

For a guy that likes The Ritz, it was BRUTAL. Glad you asked?

Pretty amazing. I know the assignment wasn’t what you expected it to be, but it makes for a great story, so there is that.

It does! First time on a 747, first time on an overnight flight, first time in the jungle, first time I couldnt speak the local language, first time I got skinny, first time I grew my hair long and grew a beard, first experience with a telex, first experience with an ivory/gold trader, et al.

Ivory and gold traders can’t be nice people, almost by definition.

It was so long ago that I dont really fully remember, but there was a trading shop in the middle of the jungle that had all kinds of goods and I dont believe I felt unsafe.

@AtlAtty - my colleagues first attempt to land in Monrovia was during the coup, and the plane was shot at and had to make an emergency landing in Abidjan. Back then though, this info was not readily available.
