Applwhite is a head coach already. Why would he leave Houston?
 
Remember when Randy Shannon kept losing to his former mentor at UNC? It's about to happen again with Diaz. Randy Shannon 2.0!
 
Lol...coaching tree. Who was on Taggart's coaching three? Didn't stop him from hiring coordinators.

Of course because everyone on defense will be retained. If you believe 75% of the offensive staff is staying, I'll take that bet right now.

I think Applewhite is a guy he coached with. I played under Ponce he has an extremely fire personality and don’t take ****. My boy played rb for him at fiu when Cristabol was there and he said the same. His personality is very similar to manny
 
We had a 6’8 tight end who couldn’t catch a cold. Ponce said to him “ David when you get to heaven God is going to ask you, what did you do with my height? He said you’re going to look God in the eyes and say not a **** thing” he proceeded to tell him I’m going to throw you the ball every game once a game to expose your sorry *** bc you could **** up a wet dream” he actually did it ran pop pass to the tight end to prove his point every game.


Just to give you an insight on what type of personality he has. All the in fighting in the locker room on the offensive side i don’t think it’s going down like that. He’s a Miami guy!! Attitude is not for the bs

Don’t want someone inexperienced as an OC.

I don't know. I don't know what his relationship is like with those coaches on the other side of the ball. For all we know, he may like them and be apart of the excuse train. ("Kids aren't executing.")
Yall are ASSUMING that Manny disapproves of the offensive staff and is going to clean house. We don't know that. I sure as **** hope so, though. I'm sure he's not a fan of having his defense on the field all game.

With that said...
When coaches get their first HC gig they often call on guys from their tree to join them. Sometimes new HC's like familiarity.

Let's talk Manny's tree. Who has he coached with over the years that has been good on offense? I'm genuinely asking because I don't know, but I'm betting that those will be some of his first phone calls. It's not always sure-fire but this may give us a good idea at who he may be targeting.
Has he worked with anybody in the past worth considering?

A good offensive staff can make Diaz successful here IMO.

im not a fan of the hire but its clear where my heart belongs but WOW you are not normally this positive.
honestly, i dont see a difference in the risk between manny and mario.

Probably similar to how Norvell runs his staff. His OC builds the game plan but Norvell calls plays. That Dillingham guy Auburn poached never called plays, neither did the guy OSU took the year before. Worked out for OSU...but this Ponce guy seems less experienced.

Interested in what App State ran though...anyone with insight?
 
Ponce seems like he has great potential as an OC... at TEMPLE.

Manny could have brought him there to cut his teeth, not at The U though. Concerns about a fresh OC have to abound. Bigger question for me goes to scheme and adaptability, which many have already said. I don't care if you run pro style, spread, RPO, or the freaking wishbone. If you don't adapt to the skill set of your players, you will fail no matter what scheme you run. An OC that can not only utilize the strengths of the team but also can mask the deficiencies.

I know, we ask for the world.
