Let's revisit the Manny hire for the 1,000th time

This is an awful list perhaps with the exception of Bronco and I can't see him ever coaching at a place like Miami.
Obviously disagree, but instead of being lazy and shooting something down without offering an alternative, what's your list?

I like Clawson. He has definitely improved Wake significantly and quite possibly could have done well here. Keeping things in perspective for those who criticize his record, Wake doesn't exactly attract the best recruits. Improvement is a slow process, especially when you're trying to become relevant instead of returning to the top ten. That said, their QB was a solid find and he's going to move them up in the pecking order in the Atlantic division. If they stay up after he leaves, you'll know Clawson is the reason and not dumb luck with a great QB find.

Nah, the list is pretty strong. This remark is cacka.
It's pretty awful. Miles is 65 and his offenses make Richt look like Sean Payton. Chip has been a disaster at every stop since Oregon. Bob Stoops is completely unrealistic. Sumlin was a great Group of 5 coach at Houston but he hasn't done anything of substance since he had Manziel at A&M. Heupel is winning with Frost's players so ask me about him in 3 years. I like Mario and LOL at Butch

The more I watch CFB, the more I wonder who we *realistically* could have hired as HC in late December that would have been a 'home run' by most folks' standards. Some of the candidates that were discussed:

Mike Leach - 3-2 so far this year included a blown 30+ point lead to UCLA at home.

Mark Stoops - 2-3 start. Likely peaked last season with an upperclassman-laden roster.

Butch - Retread at this point. 1-3 record. May very well not make a bowl this year in the Fun Belt.

Mario - This is who I wanted we hired Diaz. 3-1 and probably should have beaten Auburn. May not have left Oregon anyways due to Herbert coming back and the Nike money. May very well get to the Rose Bowl this year will be interesting to see how he fairs with a new QB next year.

Heupel - UCF has dominated opponents sans the Pitt game but Frost left the cupboard pretty loaded.
Mike Gundy.

I love how everyone is thinking that Clawson is some miracle worker. He's a really solid coach but this is year 6 for him and let's not forget that Jim Grobe won the ACC and had a nearly identical winning %. It's not hard to win 6-8 games per year there.

Agreed. That's why I said you'd know if it was Clawson once Newman leaves.

Saying it's awful doesn't make it awful. Additionally, you're mostly listing coaches that other people listed while calling my list awful....so...we getting it now?

And, laughing at Butch right on cue is funny, but not for the reasons that you mean it to be.

Still not sure about Mario. He seems to drop games when it counts. If he finishes this season with a PAC 12 championship, I will change my tune on him. Would definitely not put him above Babers, Frost, Fleck, or Mendenhol.

But who SHOULD we have hired?

Mario wanted the job. Still wants the job. And will take the job whenever he is offered.

His agent was FURIOUS because Blake never even called to discuss it with him, after Mario's left several messages. Mario was (and is) prepared to negotiate a creative contract that gets around his Oregon buyout. In fact, part of his contract has a side rider that allows for accommodation on this if the University of Miami offers him the job. Similar to what Lou Holtz had years ago in his contract with Minnesota if Notre Dame ever offered.

It's no secret what Mario's dream job is.

If Miami opens a search in the next few years? Aside from emerging names Mario is probably my first call. He has a lot of the same positive qualities that we like about Manny but he's actually had success as a HC (`12-6 overall record), will make sure the OL gets fixed, and you know he'll recruit his *** off. My one question is going to be how he performs when Herbert isn't there anymore.

From there, I'd probably kick the tires on Mike Gundy but he's Okie St. through and through and I highly doubt he will ever leave, especially given how much they can pay him. Same with Gary Patterson (I wanted him when we hired Golden) but same story as Gundy.

Beyond those names, I really like Justin Wilcox and what he's done at Cal. They were one of the worst P-5 teams in America when he took over and he has them in the Top 25 in year 3. He's young (42) and has had tremendous success coaching defense at places like USC, Washington and Wisconsin. Also went out and convinced one of the top FCS coaching minds (Beau Baldwin) to come be his OC. I think he's going to be USC's top target assuming they fire Helton and Urban turns them down.

Some other guys I would consider include Eli Drinkwitz from App St. (great OC at NC State and a Gus Malzahn disciple) and Matt Ruhle from Baylor (East Coast ties and has an amazing job at Baylor considering the circumstances)

Where did you hear this from? From all accounts, it sounds like the buyout was the reason things never got past go.

I wanted Mario too but would have gladly settled for UCFs whole staff. Atleast then we’d get out of the stone ages of offensive football and start exploiting are strengths and built in advantages with the kind of athletes we can recruit. But no, UM hires a coordinator with no HC experience from a failed regime and said new HC then goes out and hires another pro style O coordinator that thinks we have or can recruit bama or wisky olineman down here. But that’s the UM way, square peg in round hole. Smh

Gundy and Patterson each were hot and had "it" at one point and seem to have lost that. Plus, they are revered where they're at and would cost a lot to get them in Coral Gables.

I'm still open to Mario, but I want to see him win some games when the talent is the same or even better. There were games he lost last year that he shouldn't have and you could definitely say that for the Auburn game this year. If he pulls a Dabo and learns how to win, then Mario would shoot right to the very top for me. Of course, the run is - if he becomes successful there, will he really trade that in to come to the U? He's an alum, so maybe, but it'd be tough.

I think your best (realistic) suggestion is Wilcox. He's your strongest argument and if Manny doesn't pan out, I'd be interested in him.

Frost was at UCF for two years Dec '15 -Dec '17. So no it's not all Frost's players. The freshman qb Gabriel is Heupel's guy.

UCF's style of offense is what Miami should be running.

The buyout issue had ZERO to do with it.

This came directly from a close friend of Mario's who probably talks to him at least once or twice a week.

Wilcox is a west coast guy, so while I think we would be a more attractive gig than Cal, my guess is that a school like USC or Stanford (if they move on from Shaw) scoop him up in the next year or two

Well, if this is true (of course, who really knows?) Manny should be given the rest of this season and next season to show measurable improvement. If he doesn't, then we should go back to the drawing board and throw a Brnks truck at Mario, but ONLY if he shows he can win games against teams with comparable talent.

I'm sorry but I refuse to believe this unless Blake is the dumbest person on the face of the earth (quite possible). Mario was everything that he wanted in Manny with more coaching experience. Again, the scuttle was that Mario wanted to stay put at Oregon and the buyout was prohibitive

"But Cristobal leaving won't be cheap. Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens prepared for this day by building in a massive buyout of $10 million should Cristobal try to leave after one year."

"There has to be zero doubt that Cristobal would love to one day coach at Miami. However, it doesn't appear logical that such a marriage would go down right now."

My short list no order...

Les Miles- people wanna complain about our offense with Richt.,
Chip Kelly- c’mon man we see what he’s doing at UCLA
Bob Stoops- slightly above average coach
Kevin Sumlin- Really...
Josh Heupel- too early to tell, Scott Frost built a monster can he keep it going
Mario Cristobal- 9-4 at Oregon so far and inherited the top QB in the country.
Butch Davis- he’s done son.

Have you lost your **** mind. None of these guys are the answer. I just don’t understand the Manny hate give him a freaking chance. If he goes 5-7 or 6-6 okay let’s have a talk but for Christ sakes we’ve lost 2 games by a combined 7 points. There were no legitimate game changing options when we hired Manny. We won 7 games last year. We’re an average team accept it and give him a chance to make us a great team.

I’m a big fan of Bill Clark.

Came from High School, got his first gig at a FCS school in Jackson State. Took a 7-5 team, and won 11 games taking them to the playoffs.

Gets hired to resurrect a folded UAB program. Goes 6-6 1st yr ; 8-5 2nd yr ; 11-3 3rd year, and now has UAB 3-1 this yr.

The guy can coach. Went 106-11 in high school and now is 39-19 as a college coach.

W how far our program has fallen, being that he’s resurrected a folded program and fund raised money to upgrade their athletic facilities.

That should’ve been our guy.
