Anyone have a summary of the 247 article on him?
...With a school like Miami, there is a chance to make a really big impact and I like Coach [Mark] Richt, and think he will do big things down there...
Opportunity At Miami Appeals To OL Leatherwood
Commitments rarely bring recruiting to a halt these days, especially for the elite prospects like Pensacola Washington offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood.
Leatherwood (6-6, 315) chose Alabama a full year ago. That was followed by offers from Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Louisville, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and USC.
"I already knew recruiting would be ongoing because that's when I first got on the radar," Leatherwood said. "Alabama was only my second offer so my plan was to keep consider other schools. Back then, I was just getting used to being in contact with college coaches. They understand that now and I don't think it's an issue."
Leatherwood, who's slated to enroll early, elaborated on how he balances the idea of being committed somewhere while entertaining additional choices.
"For my situation, Alabama was the first college campus I saw," Leatherwood said. "I had someone enlighten me on their tradition and that's why I chose to commit. I'm still looking around though, I made that decision without anything to compare. I want to weigh my options and build relationships with more coaches so I'm sure about everything."
Leatherwood mentioned Miami, Michigan, and USC as summer destinations considering he hasn't been to that trio yet. He also likes Florida, Florida State, and LSU, who have all hosted him at least twice.
After he got settled in Coral Gables, it didn't take Mark Richt long to move on Leatherwood. Offensive line coach Stacy Searels followed up by visiting twice during the evaluation period.
"It's hard to describe how but I keep in contact with Coach Richt and Coach Searels every few days," Leatherwood said. "Sometimes we text, other times it's over Twitter, we mix it up. They say it's a great situation because I could make an impact and help get Miami back to the level they used to be on."
Leatherwood isn't an expert on the history of Hurricane football but it's more of their present situation that provides the biggest draw.
"Nothing is new but I definitely like the program and I see the opportunity there," Leatherwood said. "They have a new head coach and a need for offensive tackles so the door is wide open. It's hard to say much more until I get down there but that's definitely going to happen."
Leatherwood's Wildcats haven't finished with a winning record in awhile but this spring has him hopeful about his senior year being somewhat more positive.
"I love the competitiveness when I get back into football," Leatherwood said. "We worked on rebuilding our team from last year and it went very well. Lots of young guys stepped up and showed they're capable of playing for us. We didn't win our spring game but we made good gains as far as our team goes. We got better with not turning the ball over."
Leatherwood is a five star prospect according to the 247Sports Composite, ranking him 27th overall in the nation, 6th at his position, and 7th overall in the state of Florida.
