LB Depth

Have zero idea why anyone is trying to excuse this not being a cause for concern b/c of the formation we run. lol.

Here's a thought: Football is a contact sport and literally any down can be your last. Depth at LB is very much a cause of concern. Both Pinckney and Shaq have played through injuries throughout their careers, so let's not act like either are invincible.

Whether we play a 43, 34, 425, 52, 62, whatever.....you don't want to be in position where you are running w/ 4 healthy LBers. Forget the starters, let's talk about ST, and let's also talk about rotation. Also by all accounts, Brooks is more of a rush end than a LB as well.

Great post. Sometimes I forget the audience here and get into debates that are simply a waste of my time. Folks like you and a few others are why I post here.

But you're absolutely right, obviously. And the staff knows it. Someone will be working with Baker's group once camp kicks off. Finley or Smith are the only real logical candidates.

I wouldn’t bother , they aren’t getting that we have three lb’s and some strikers.

It’s a long season with no lb’s, strikers are not lb’s, hence why they’re called “ strikers “.

This is not good and it’s a long season. Depending on majority green , undersized guys as backup ma at two positions they don’t play is bad.

Sorry this is hard to get.

God have mercy if Joyner is out, Shaq and Pink better have an oxygen pack on their backs and not get nicked.

This is my point. I used to chart the seasons back in the day, and then I got lazy and a kid who I think posts here, Daniel Gould, started doing an excellent job of it so I stopped entirely. But I'd love to see snap counts for last year for Shaq and Mike. 70%? 75%? Gotta think it's somewhere around there. That's a sizeable chunk of the game where you have a backup in. And things happen in hyperspeed during a game, so sure if you could pause time and make sure that only 1 of 55 or 56 is out at a time, and when that happens then McCloud is in, then maybe you could micromanage it that way. But the bottom line is Brooks has to play against UF at a position he's never played, and he's not physically where he will be in another year or two. That should absolutely concern people, and I guarantee it concerns the staff.

One or two of these guys will have to learn the two lb spots , it’s a must.

Good things is that kids like Finley, Keontra, Gil, Derrick Smith, Carter are versatile.

Manny and Baker may have to get creative with their personnel, and maybe that's not a bad thing.

Definitely a positive. It really would be nice if either Gil or D. Smith turns out to be a baller this year. It'd make life a **** of a lot easier with the rotations, and would allow one of D. Smith or Finley to spell at backer at times, if you can count on Gil at Striker.

I know we all love our Canes, well 95% do while the other 5% are just trolls, but sometimes we substitute logic w/ being homers. Every fan base does it. Your post wasn't a knock, but more less a legitimate concern. It was a concern of mine during the recruiting process as well simply b/c Wilder and Steed may never play a down here, or if they do, may never be the same. Obviously our staff have taken that in to consideration b/c they are loading up on LBers now.

With that being said, if Shaq or Pinckney go down, we will be screwed on that second level b/c of the depth problems. Hopefully nothing happens, but a concern nevertheless.

True. And any team, if their stud, all conference players go down, they're gonna be in some chit. That's understandable. Not many programs have All-Americans just hanging out in case of injury. I'm only concerned because we're starting the year off already razor thin. And you know there's attrition, there always is. Hearing Manny say Joyner is a full go a week or two in camp will be music to my ears. I hope it happens. And I hope Jennings isn't far behind either. But @Cribby is right, one of those 2 kids will be working with Baker when camp starts. No doubt.

The LB recruiting has really been **** poor. And, that's with being a fan of Brooks as a prospect and Huff as a modern 'backer. Might as well just call it as it is today, hope it's not a sign of broader issues and that we get our **** together at this position going forward. Oh, and that we have luck this year.

Missing wilder and steed are huge, they came here knowing they’d have to sit behind shaq and them and haven’t produced a thing yet albeit injury

Been screaming this on the recruiting board for a year. And it should be better for this class than it is right now, but that’s for the other board.

There's been a few threads about the various kids over the past few months, but I figured I'd consolidate Manny's comments just a few minutes ago at ACC Media day.

He just said that Waynmon Steed and Bradley Jennings won't be participating when camp kicks off on the 26th due to "long-term injuries". Nothing really new, we knew Steed was out for a while and it had been rumored Jennings wouldn't be ready.

But he also said Patrick Joyner will be limited due to a lower leg injury. He has not been ruled out against UF, but he's not healthy to start camp.

ALSO, Avery Huff is not yet cleared and will not be participating. Sam Brooks is enrolled and will participate.

So, that leaves Miami with 4 healthy LBs. Obviously Shaq and Pinck will play a ton, and really we don't have much of a choice. McCloud will back them up, and then it's Sam Brooks as the next man up. I don't see any situation where Brooks doesn't get at least a couple snaps against UF....you can't play the whole game with only the 3 seniors, especially when you'll be in heavy at times and all 3 will be on the field together (yes, I know the majority of snaps will employ a Striker).

I wonder if Finley will get looks as a true linebacker? Gil or Smith at Striker and Finley at Will, just for a few plays? Having to play Brooks in game 1 scares the **** out me. And of course, god forbid 55 or 56 turn an ankle. I know all summer I was told I was Chicken Little and that the LB spot would be fine. Anybody wanna take that stance now?

Sure. You're Chicken Little and the LB spot will be fine.

I’m very impressed with the last class but we just don’t have good recruiters at the linebacker position

We need Huff to get cleared. I disagree with anyone saying Brooks isn't capable of taking snaps right away. He's built like an upperclassmen in college now. He's way more gifted athletically than anyone who is hurt. We have 2 freaking LB coaches so it shouldn't be hard to get him ready. It wasn't that long ago we had 3 true frosh LBs starting. Now we're freaking out about a talented frosh as a backup? Gimme a break.

Yes LB recruiting has been trash and i don't like the group in this year class besides cave.

People don't like Flagg because he's short, right?

The film don't lie!
