True , I loved the Thanksgiving Day game against Gables even though we always lost.
One year a club called “Thanes “ the night before I last played snuck into Gables and bricked up there locker room causing a (2) hour game delay.
The Miami Herald called them “ The midnight masons “
Brother I loved SW , what If I told you Jim Kelly played QB in back yard pick up games in Chickillo’s back yard on 87th ave .
I have some great stories
Like I said, my guys were early-, really almost, mid-sixties. They were in a club called "Bucks" and used to get into fights with Counts and Ching-tang (Chinks) from Gables. (Today, even the illegal HS fraternities would be politically correct and change that name.)
Don Soldinger was in Bucks but he was a little older than my friends.
Some of the other guys I remembered MSW were Hank Hall (RB-DB) who went to Auburn, Fred Troike (LB who went to Alabama but I think transferred to a smaller program); Jay McCoy (RB); Steve Tannen (A-A safety at UF and later with Raiders). There were others but I can't remember. My good friend played C-LB. He is now deceased.
As much talent as MSW had, Gables had more. They had begun to overtake longtime powerhouse Miami High.
Back in the day Miami High played powerhouses from Jacksonville. Sometime back DaytonaCane posted about trips down to Miami from Jax. Her future husband, Doug Davis, played for Jax Lee than he came to UM. Played fullback for us, right after our all-time great Don Bosseler went to the NFL. Doug was on same offense with A-A QB Fran Curci and future Raider great Jim Otto. Back then, fullback was key in our option attack. As I said in another thread, the Gustafson Miami Drive Series Belly Option (which he first conceived of with the non-pareil all-world West Point backfield in the late '40's), might have been the true invention and forerunner of option offenses, not some Texas high schools adaptations.
Actually, Miami and Army QB great Arnold Tucker might have come out of the great program at Miami High. Don't remember for sure.
