Lashlee on Joe Rose @7:40am

Said all the right things. Ill say this, he just might save Diaz's job if he can get these players up to speed on the offense immediately. The good thing is we have a few weak teams to start the season so we can iron out the kinks before the MSU game.

I respect Diaz for pushing all his chips to the middle of the table and betting on this guy to save him. Its all or nothing.

Temple Ain’t gonna be easy

Temple Ain’t gonna be easy

I guess I was talking about Wagner and UAB. Temple will be a good test but it aint like playing UF game 1 either like last year. And it will pale in comparison to us traveling to East Lansing and playing MSU who will really put this offense to the test as they always have a stout D. We will really see if Lashlee is the goods after that game.

Should be able to get the players up to speed, if it's as conceptually simple/easy to learn as everyone says it is. Either that, or our players are really dumb, particularly at QB (I'm worried this is the case)

Q: What do you think is the first thing the quarterback group has to focus on this spring so their efforts translate to success this season?

RL:
"Whoever our quarterback is going to be is going to has to earn the respect of his teammates. That allows him to be the leader. It's no different for coaches. We come in, we have to develop relationships with our players so they trust us and they'll listen to us and do what we're asking them to do and understand there's a reason for everything we do. As the quarterback, you're the leader of the offense. A lot of times, you're the leader of the team. And if those guys trust you and believe in you, because you've earned it, they're going to play better and harder around you.

"We've got to have quarterbacks who are willing to come in and be selfless, to be team guys, do whatever it takes for us to get the ball in the end zone and earn the respect of their teammates. Really, that's where it all starts, from an intangibles standpoint. Throwing the ball, making the right reads, getting the ball where it needs to go, all that stuff is important. But if they don't have the respect of their teammates, it doesn't matter. We're looking for someone who can earn that right, to be our leader."

Q: What have been some of your first impression of the quarterbacks?

RL: "I've gotten to meet them all once, very surface-level. I'm excited to get to know them better and develop relationships with them. Everybody's different and like I told them, everybody gets a fresh start. It's a clean slate. But, you're also going to earn everything you get. Nothing's going to be given to anybody. So, again, we're looking for the guy who can stand up and prove he wants to do what it takes and sacrifice to be the leader of our football team."

Not to crap on you but, I don’t care

Anything short of beating Clemson in the ACC, or almost beating, is a failure.

The schedule is soft, but Manny has proven, Vegas spreads be damned, he can loss to anyone

Including FIU

Agreed. With moderate improvement on offense and an accurate kicker, we could go 11-1 with that 2020 schedule.

The basic message of coordinator/QB coach Rhett Lashlee?

That his offense believes in “spreading the field, making plays in space and playing fast.”

He adds “We want to play fast, we want to play physical. You have to be able to run and throw the ball to win in college football. I’m from Arkansas, but I grew up when Nolan Richardson was winning national championships at Arkansas (with “40 minutes of ****”). We can have something a little unique to us that gives us an advantage - at the end of the day the more plays you have the more chances your players have to have that ball and score.

“We’re in the shotgun probably 90 percent of the time, but the longer you hold the ball the more sacks you have, more bad things happen. In our passing game - let’s get it out of his hand, get it to playmakers. That doesn’t mean you won’t throw down the field (either).”

does it really matter at this point? Unless they find four or five new OL the qb's will still get destroyed.
The OL is a concern for sure, but Lashlee's system should put them in a better position to succeed. I think Roman did a really good analysis of the time it took to get the football out of the QB's hands (this is an actual stat that is tracked)--he compared SMU to Miami last year, and it was a pretty big difference. Not surprising considering Enos constantly had our QB's under center running slow developing play action.
