Lane vs Mario

Thats such a chicken and egg thing I don’t know. I think Cignetti is doing it though. He can identify, develop and coach. I don’t know how he ranks as a recruiter but he maximizes what he has with the nil they have and they do have nil at Indiana.

If you can do what he does at UM you’ll eventually get better better players.
Agreed, although I’d also like to give Cignetti a few more years. He’s a hot name right now, and sometimes those guys fizzle out and aren’t as great as they appear at first. It does seem like they’re really putting a lot more into their football now, and I hope he stays there and continues to develop the program.

He’s in his 60’s.

They're not paying that because Kiffin is good, they're paying that because:

1. two programs bet on one guy

2. both programs have enormous pressure to get it right and most importantly

3. coaching salaries have adjusted enormously over the past three years.

4. no one else is available.

Nobody blinked at the money we paid Mario to come here, people may argue it was far too much now, but compared to other coaches salaries, he's falling because he isn't receiving pay adjustments.

I'm also not sure why Kiffin is supposed to be in this high regard, he's thrown away a playoff spot vs the Gators last year, he's barely snuck by Kentucky, Arkansas and Washington State this season and can't get over the hump against the big SEC teams that are weaker than ever, with NIL bags that are absolutely in the elite echelon. He's not as good as you make him to be, period.
Thank you. He’s had an excellent year THIS year, but let’s not go crazy.

Yes, I think I didn’t fully explain what I meant by that.

I realize he’s one of the older coaches, but he hasn’t been a head coach at a P4 school until now. In fact, when he was at James Madison, I don’t believe they had even moved up to FBS yet, although I know that his coaching was a big reason why they got there. So yes, he’s doing an amazing job, and seems to be a perfect fit at IU. However, we have seen so many coaches that are incredible coaches at one school, and are the hot name in coaching searches, and then they get a new job and they suck so badly at every other job after that. The fact that he’s 65 is just another reason for him to continue at IU and retire there.

Also, he possibly could coach at IU for another maybe 8, 10 years, and then hand it off to someone younger. If he wants, he could groom an assistant. By that time it would be a really solid program, and that’s around the timeline it seems to take programs to “stick” and become major programs anyway (can be less with NIL now). He’s already two years in, and with Indiana’s kind of money, they can be a major player. They just haven’t chosen to prior to Cignetti. If he were to leave for another program, the money may go away again.

I don’t have any strong ties to Indiana or anything, although one of my close friends from high school got his masters and PhD there (and I’ve had some colleagues who got their MBAs there). I just like to see more schools investing in their athletic departments.

A lot of this. Mike Norvell, Justin Fuentes, Billy Napier (sort of), Jim McElwain, Willie Taggert, Scott Frost…

We’re not winning the ACC.
Second team out last year.
First team out this year.
Progress!

Joking aside, the last three weeks of games aren't going chaulk, which you alluded to.
I'm hoping we just give ourselves a shot.

Regarding the ACC, Pitt can beat GT. Geez they had 3 weeks to prepare.
See what happens and go from there.
