Landon Tengwall: Miami's OL vs FSU

Good stuff. Stunts gave us a lot of problems and pretty easy to see both McCoy and Samson could improve how they get their hands up earlier on those plays.

On the plus, I see a lot more pulling action and with Lofton’s better health those plays should get better (but might need to work on Lofton using his shoulders so much. Do that to the wrong guy and he could get hurt)

Can’t wait to run more pistol though.

How about all this ****? Congdon can’t get to the second level to block 9. And then SJ pulls and misses 9. If Congdon gets to the second level and blocks 9, SJ can pull and take 7. Just a massive failure.

A few things

1. Center did well snapping the ball and getting to his block.
2. At the 14 second mark there is a huge hole where the guard pulled. If the RB hits that hole, the center and tackle have sealed off #8 and its a huge gain. Even on a "bad" play, there were opportunities in the run game.
3. The pulling guard went too wide, which a big reason he missed the block. You can see him try to slow himself down once he realizes he overran the hole. He needs to follow the asses of his OL and turn the corner quickly.

I've mentioned this more than once. One of the biggest issues I see in his plays has nothing to do with being undersized. Ironically, it's that he seems jumpy and overruns or oversteps on plays. Happened a good amount at Wake. He basically moved himself out of plays. As I've previously said, this is not new for this season. When he was in that FB role, he often had trouble finding someone to block. I'd love to know from the OL guys, @Ironmanfootball @gogeta4 @San Amaro Dr, if that's a common issue based on inexperience or if it's a feel/instinct thing. Congdon, on the other hand, seems way more composed.

(I know zippo about the state of mind of an OL)

Good stuff.

Translating to the RB front, Mallory has better vision than Fletcher. With Fletcher dinged up and the OL looking much better in the run-blocking department (still with a few hiccups, but overall massively improved compared to prior weeks), it would be wise to ride 21 and 2 (pause) and save Fletcher for later in the year.

Fletcher will be needed against more physically-imposing front 7’s.

SJ's hips are easily picked off by stunters to the point of toppling the small guard.

Gonna be a huge problem.

Definitely lost 1 v 1s at times but a lot of the issues seem to stem from our guys not finding work on some of these plays coupled with poor vision from our backs

Maybe some one else more experienced than me can settle this but I actually think on point 3 he didnt miss his block, Congdon was trying to get to 9 on the second level, couldnt, is left looking for work and SJ was supposed to get 7 (or seal off whoever is on the outside) and when he noticed 9 sneaking he tried to correct to pick him up. I also think just from a pure physics standpoint, you have a 300lb person running fast from right to left and then you ask that person to STOP all their momentum and then get going from left to right to pick up the inside rusher, I think a person that size would be much more impactful if all their momentum continued carrying them outside.

Looking at the slomo above, at the snap Congdon kinda stutters his feet and initially is leaning outside trying to get to 9, then watch as 9 jumps in the gap and he realizes he cannot get him, he is just lost looking around but if he reaches 9 and SJ is allowed to pancake 7 or 10 coming from the outside the play lines up nicely blocking wise leaving only the FS. If what you are saying is true and he was supposed to stop and take 9, then Congdon still has no one to block and 7 and 10 are free rushers in the gap and the play likely still goes nowhere.
