ATHENS, Ga. -- If Georgia goes to the Ramsey Center at any point this preseason it will only be for one reason -- to practice.
When asked whether or not the team would visit the pool at the student recreation center as it did under previous head coach Mark Richt, Kirby Smart dismissed the notion, saying that his team has a limited amount of time to get ready for his first season as the Bulldogs’ head coach.
“Our guys understand that we’ve got work to do and we’ve got a certain amount of time to get it in,” Smart said.
There are also situations like the one in Tuesday’s practice when the Bulldogs were fortunate to only have to miss 10 minutes of practice because of lightning in the area. With the school’s new indoor practice facility under construction, Smart and company have been dodging bad weather since camp began on August 1.
“Not to mention I don’t know when I’m going to lose a practice to rain,” Smart said. “So the minute you do that, you could lose two, and I’ve got to keep that in my back pocket. It’s not in the plans.”
Smart misunderstood the question at first when asked about it in his press conference on Tuesday. He thought he was being asked whether or not the Bulldogs will use the facility to get their work in if bad weather forced them inside.
During his time at Georgia, four years as a player, a year as a graduate assistant and a year as an assistant coach, he says the team never took a pool day.
“We didn’t go to Ramsey when I was here before,” he said. “We went to Ramsey to practice.”
So what are you guys thoughts on this? Is this a sign of disrespect to the traditions Richt brought to the program? A necessary cultural change? Both?
Any of the UGA fans that frequent this board care to share when he started this tradition?
One thing I know, Kirby Fart better start winning soon or his Fake Saban routine is going to wear thin really quick.
