Is it me or does this current staff, not the new Richt, not take kickoff and punt returns serious. Do we not have a better option on punt return than Berrios. I like the little dude, but so far he hasn't shown me much. Also is Walton expected to take one to the house on kickoff returns? I hope this part of the game is seriously reevaluated.

Most likely those squares didn't believe in raw play-making ability but rather ball security, thus they put somebody back there that's a coal shoveler with sound fundamentals.

New coach. And then players like Sam Bruce, Desmond Phillips, and hopefully Ahmmon Richards back there. Sign me up!

only disappointment Ive had with larry scott is taking elder off punt returns, looked like we finally had a playmaker there

It's not important anymore. The staff will be gone soon. I think most of us figured out at the beginning of the season that Elder was the top punt return guy on the team. Why Berrios was put back there after returning from injury is one of the mysteries of the universe...

We'll have Bruce and Phillips coming in soon. I could see one or both of those fellows on the returns....

Hopefully we re-discover the fine art of blocking punts, too....

Did you see Barrios let the ball hop, then field it in the middle of a crowd? If ball security is the goal, he's not the guy. Actually he's just not the guy. He's one of those guys who thinks they're Roscoe Parrish, jukes around until the defense gets there to stuff him.

Two words and we can solve the answer to all of their problems... CORN ELDER!!!!!!!

We're too thin at cb and he'll be a top NFL prospect. Well have plenty of young athletes to go with instead with the class coming in, Sam Bruce, Desmond Phillips.

Depth. Every time we find a good returner, he's also our best RB/corner/whatever and we can't risk him on special teams.

Miami has always put it's best returners as the returners - Kevin Williams, Tremain Mack, Santana Moss, Andre Johnson, Philip Buchanon, blah, blah, blah....

Elder should've been returning punts all season long....

You play to win the game....

This year he should have, but not next. He'll be our only returning corner with experience besides Redwine.

And also back then we had some of the best depth of all time.

I see where you guys are coming from and I agree if Sam Bruce can be a great returner we should put him back there. But we are going to need to rely on Bruce on offense like we rely on Corn on defense considering our need of receivers, especially if Coley leaves early (which he shouldn't). When it comes to special teams you have to put the best guy back there no matter who it is and in this case it's Elder. Special teams is a huge part of the game and can determine the final outcome. Example, if Hester doesn't take that punt back against Louisville in 04 we probably lose that game. We have to get our playmakers the ball!

There was argument when al took Duke off of kick returns. I agreed with that decision as Duke was just too big a part of the offense to risk an injury, but those are the type of decisions Richt will have to make. Once we get deeper as a team, there will be more options, but for now it's hard to justify risking a starter if you don't trust the guy behind him. Incidentally, go watch vids of the 2001 team and you'll see Kellen Winslow making plays on ST. Those were the days.

I can't remember one ever getting injured, though I'm sure it's happened.

There was a player named Pee Wee Smith (I think) a couple decades ago who got demolished on a return and he wasn't injured....

None of our big name returners has been injured that I can remember...

Can someone tell me the last time Miami had a punt/kick returner injured during a return?

Put your best returners on return duty. Pretty simple. Only dummies underestimate the importance of scores or huge plays in the return game. When you play scared, you wind up with Less Welker as your return man.

Last year...

They inexplicably kept Stacy Coley on returns although everyone saw he was in a mental slump and should have soley been playing WR. But, he was hurt last year returning kicks more than once.
