I think the should-have-punted crowd is falsely assuming we would have pinned them inside the 5. There was a significant chance a punt from the 36 winds up in the endzone. You drop back and pass and there could be interference, illegal hands to the face, targeting, etc., in addition to the strong likelihood you simply gain 4 yards.

I've seen our Punter, I don't assume he can execute a good short punt like that.

Our punter has no touch. And our punt unit is susceptible to a block.

That’s the whole point of my comment. The decision was if you go for it or punt it. A 54 yard field goal shouldn’t have been an option in that situation.

I assumed it was but on the replay I didn’t see it. At a neighbors. Wasn’t asking to rewind that trash.

Odds are a lot better nowadays. I can guarantee the opponent would make it against Miami lol.

Not when that makes it easy to pin them within the 10 and let our D pin their ears back. As others have said, going for it would have been better than a 54 yard FG attempt.

Analytically going for it was best, punt next, and FG last (mostly b/c NCAA kickers only make 47.7% of 54 yd FGs).

None of them materially changed Miami's win probability.

...and it is fair discussion...

...but what if he was confident of the W and wanted to see if his FG unit could kick the 54 yarder under pressure?

Don't bring statistics and logic into this. Haven't you heard, Mario is a moron and this program will be lucky to win 8 games this year, because they had a sloppy half, and STILL won by two scores on the road, against a decent P4 team.
 
Should have gone for it. Get first down run out the clock / score and pretty much a guarantee win.

Punt or try a very low percentage long FG are "safe" losing mentality, which unfortunately, is Mario's playbook...

Absolutely atrocious especially with a kicker who has struggled kicking. At that spot on the field it’s go for it t . 4th and 4 versus a long fg with a suspect kicker is an easy pick. It could’ve been a total nightmare if that block is returned for a TD . Which is why a lot of teams don’t try that kick at that moment. Where was his analytics guy?
