Very important in our quest for a double bye in the ACC tournament.
  • Double Bye (Quarterfinals): Seeds 1, 2, 3, and 4 advance directly to the Quarterfinals on Thursday
A Clemson loss means we only need to split our last two games to earn the double bye. North Carolina is very likely to lose Saturday at Duke. Even if we were to lose our last two games, an NC win over Clemson almost guarantees at least a three way tie for third and fourth place.

ACC Tiebreaker: https://theacc.com/sports/2017/12/15/MBB_1215171609.aspx

It would be awesome to retain 3rd place in the standings and so not to have to face Duke until the tournament final. Fortunately given the remaining ACC schedule that appears to be the most likely outcome.

Go Canes!!

We need UNC to beat Clemson... and in turn get beaten by Duke on Saturday

If VT can pull off an upset of UVa, then we end #2 in ACC
Both very possible. But hard to trust UNC to take care of business tonight. Very Jekyl and Hyde team.

Counterpoint: UNC losing guarantees us a double bye (I think). They'd be 2 back in the loss column with 2 to play and we have the tiebreaker. Even if by some miracle they're able to force a 3 way tie, as I read the tiebreaker rules, they'd still be the 5th seed with a combine conference record of 0-2, whereas ours would be 1-1, and Clemson's would be 2-0.

if nc loses today miami is in top-4-seed(double bye) with any win, or tied with nc at 12-6 worst case of 2 losses. here they are in top4 by head to head with nc. but must be a 2way tie for 4th (so if clemson beats georgia tech thats good.) but if clemson loses to gt all are 1-1 among group and in a 3 way tie, the record against duke (highest other team) would determine winner. if nc beats duke then its nc. if not all are 0-1 vs duke so use same formula versus virginia. if all 0-1 keep going to other teams in order. it gets crazy crazy, but nc losing now may still work out. hard to know who to root for, they r tied right now in first half.

ooops, if nc loses to duke they have 7 losses so Miami is in... if they beat duke, must be a 2way tie for us (clemson must beat gt) else NC is in by virtue of beating duke. so IF NC LOSES today we must root for EITHER Clemson to beat GT OR Duke to beat NC. only if both go wrong are we out of top4.

if clemson loses today we need to win 1 more game in case we are in a 2way tie with them for 4th. if it is a 3way tie (nc wins today AND beats duke) we are ok with a win but not 2 losses, and will need GT to beat clemson since we lose the 3way tie breaker if all (clem mia NC) are 1-1 in group since record vs duke is next decider. if clemson loses today and nc loses to duke its a 3way tie if clemson beats gt next, and we are all 1-1 in group and 0-1 vs duke so record vs virginia is next and then others... too tuff for me rn, or for ai.

UNC wins. Can clinch double bye with a win in last two or a UNC loss in Durham
if we lose out, clemson beats GT, and NC loses to duke, its a 3way tie at 12-6. we are all 1-1 in group so next its record vs duke. we would all be 0-1 so then its record vs virginia. NC is in at 1-0. we are 0-1 and clemson is 0-0 and so its head to head, and we are NOT in final 4. so u are almost right. best we win 1 more lol.

We have not played Duke, nor will we in the regular season. So we would not be 0-1 in the Duke tie breaker.

Huh? We didn't play Duke. We only miss if we lose both and UNC beats Duke. Not likely.
it goes by pctg per rule. 0-0 and 0-1 are the same. in a 3way tie we are all the same pctg versus duke if duke beats nc. then we are lined up vs virginia where nc is 1-0 and we and clemson are 000% (one is 0-1 one is o-o). head to head then gets clemson the last double bye

Can we get the 3 seed if we lose both of the next 2?

Looks like we’re a lock for at least #3 if we win one of the next 2. But what about losing both? I don’t want the 4 seed.

if we lose both, pretty much need GT to beat clemson. the nc duke game then doesnt matter... NC wins they r in top 4, nc loses, they are in because versus Virginia they did better than us 1-0 vs 0-1...(0-0 vs duke and 0-1 vs duke are the same for tie-breaker purposes.)

From the ACC tiebreaker link in first post:

) If procedure (1) fails to break the tie, then each tied team’s record shall be compared to the team occupying the highest position in the final regular-season standings, continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage by a higher winning percentage. (NOTE: common opponents only)

We didn't play Duke and Clemson didn't play Virginia so first common opponent in the standings is NC State. We beat them but both Clemson and North Carolina lost.

So in a 3 way tie ( we lose 2, NC loses to Duke and Clemson beats GT) then IMHO we get 3rd.

If we win either of the next two we earn 3rd as well.
