Kevin Steele

Its hard for me to judge Steele. His frustrations became clear in the MTSU game.

No pressure from the DL and they were dicing us up strategically.

So he brings pressure to make up for it and we get bombed deep multiple times.

I think the defense was truly lacking talent from top to bottom.
Honestly if you go back and watch his interviews from before the MTSU I genuinely got the “I’m concerned” vibe from him

It wasn’t just coach soeak. He’s a very straightforward guy and I think he questioned the team

Sure it’s easy for me to say that now but I was struck by how he seemed worried how the team would handle them

Not giving him a pass or excusing anything but I’m really not sure how to judge him either

I liked the Steele hire initially, because I thought we would see a lot of what he did at Auburn & LSU.

But we really didn’t run too much of any of that & it seemed like the Defensive play calling was pretty much on autopilot for most of the year...
I'm kinda here as well

I'd be cool with him leaving or staying, but no more than 1 more year if we aren't a top 25 caliber defense (don't think 25 is asking too much)

I don't understand why QB draws are automatic 8-20 yards against us. There was never, never, never anyone in the middle of a field from the UNC game on for us.

Not sure how much of that is a Steele thing or how much is an abysmal LB play thing

At least some of that was Steele...The LB were running elsewhere on replays. At least a lot of them.

I'm not giving up on Steele and I'm trying to keep it all relative to the injuries, new system transition, poor LB talent, average corner talent, etc... and then it seemed like some upperclassmen flat out quit

But even with all of that...I expected just a little more. We were good against bad offenses, but any offense with a pulse killed us.

I agree completely just hypothesizing

I miss Lances breakdowns I don’t have the stomach to go back and rewatch games

I couldn’t even watch the first go around

I guess it was impossible to expect Steele being able to run his defense on a team that didn't get proper defensive coaching for six years straight.

Let's be real, Mannys defense doesn't even pass the high school test schematically
Manny's defense at PSU this year, with better talent, wasn't all that bad, except against the big boys OSU and Michigan. His scheme doesn't work against the big boys, but at least he held his own against Rutgers (our equivalent MTSU)

At some point it has to come from the players.

There's a reason Kinchens is an All-American.

One more point about that

I love Kinchens...And yes he cleaned his act up after MTSU/UNC

Played at a high level and I think he can be an AA candidate by the time he leaves and play in NFL. True cane and apparently a leader as well. But there is no way anyone can tell me he was a first team AA safety. He was a very good, maybe top 10-15 safety in America. But I have no idea how he was named first team AA even if ignore the gaffes early in the season (and how does one ignore them when assessing a kid's body of work for an AA award?)

Weird. But fully confident in him moving forward.

I guess that begs the question do we have any Coaches on this staff that can elevate the play of their unit based on their teaching methodology or can this team not walk & chew bubble gum until there’s 50+ 5-stars by year 5 or 6?

How do teams with lesser talent somehow manage to produce better results on an annual basis?
Perfect point.

You do not need talent to get your team to play well. Teams like UTEP or Rice manage to execute better than Miami. This is one big sign that highlights the poor coaching all around. They could not get this team to execute even against the worst teams...there is zero excuse for this. If Utah St can score points there is zero reason for Mario and Co's poor performance on offense and D.

Let's not leave this old fart out of the fray he got worked vs the 1st offense we faced. Those 1st 3 weeks we slept walk on D vs teams with no QB or vertical passing attack. Not having a pass rush, with slow *** corners and ****** tackling was the perfect remedy.
Is he related to Lexington Steele?

Don't have a problem with Steele yet. Huge talent, size and speed gap at LB and i think we milked everything we could out out and we had. DB play we super frustrating at times but no depth. DL was solid.

I haven't seen enough to warrant another change, lets see if year 2 we can get consistency and better play

Agreed. Look at his Auburn defenses year in and year out. The variable this year was our roster. Imagine running a 4-3 defense with only 1 LB and 1 CB. Because that is pretty much what he was stuck with.
