Sometimes a change of scenery does wonders. We've seen it a ton over time, and obviously way more recently with the portal.

This kid was awful last year, mostly on the outside. But you get him a new scheme, with a fresh start, at a more natural position, and play to his strengths, and he's one of the best DBs in the country.

Crazy how things can change from one year to the next. Literally NOBODY at Auburn batted an eye when he bounced. And he's been so **** good for us. IMO our 2nd or 3rd MVP on defense, just for how good he's been and how much I have no idea who'd play that spot were he not here.

I hate hyperbole and I’m not a ********* (though being a Miami fan would suggest otherwise)

But if we had him last year….

(It was a ******* joke guys good lord)

Guidry would've found a way to **** him up.

I almost tossed the grenade of grenades on this board a week or so ago, but I refrained. But I'll roll it under your desk.

If Lance Guidry was retained for 2025, and we had this exact roster (Bain at full health, Mesidor in the money year, the secondary talent infusion, Toure, etc)....is the defense as good as we have now? Close to as good? Not even close to as good? As bad as last year?

Obviously impossible to answer, but a fun question to really get everyone's blood pressure up.

absolutely NOTHING would have changed... first, he likely would have played nickel, I give you that and Porter likely could have gone to his natural spot outside, but we still would have run way too many stunts and our safety play would still be god awful and it did not seem like we used our nickel last year the way heatherman does this year, blitzing, filling the B gap, closing on screens, etc. all this Scott does VERY well would have been gutted.

Recall the tape on him coming out of Auburn, and not to throw you under the bus but even your comment on the first page of his commitment thread you mentioned something like "taking a flyer on this guy to replace karnley and hope he returns to form? Ill take it i guess" is what most UM fans though about the pickup, no one could have envisioned him playing at this level and I think a lot of that has to do with what we are asking him to do. We definitely had a jimmy and joe problem on defense last year but the bigger issue IMO was the x and o's... we had Bain, Messidor, Barrow, Barron and lightfoot on the DL last year and the ones that returned look like new players this year.

I want to believe better than last year, but not even close to this year.

Guidry, I think, had a statement about “needing to see what the offense is doing” before making adjustments…and that it usually occurs at halftime.

Only he never really made any adjustments.

Heatherman, what has impressed me the most…especially the last two games…ability to adjust IN GAME. Not even halftime, but between possessions.

It was a joking around comment with OBM

I didn’t read anything beyond the all caps NOTHING but I’m sure it was good

Having him wouldn't have been enough to make antmy major difference.
I guess I should have put a bigger disclaimer on things.

The hurt is clearly still running deep about Guidry and the defense. Let it go guys he can’t hurt you anymore.

Pleasant surprise; but when u got ppl to feed & a strong will, a light bulb can come on. Loved that he’s being recognized, & given flowers.
Lance made the comment a few times and I’m not gonna steal it from him but Heatherman obviously knew what he wanted

Scott. Thomas. Toure (yes I’m aware he’s imperfect but we would be ****ED without him). Late portal additions

Just a guy that knows his system and finding talent in a short amount of time that has made a huge difference this year

Speaking of putting some respect on his name, maybe OP can edit the thread to spell the kids name correctly

Hope we can still make these types of evals in the new, limited portal window. I’m not sure what our defense would look like without Thomas and Scott, who both came in late window, correct?
Well with the limited window it’s more of a middle dated one between the two. So there is more time than the original earlier window….

And while some spring additions have been good, we have been complete *** at WR additions in the late window in terms of hit rate and have completely whiffed in early window there. So this window probably benefits us at WR. And given we have always been late to get the qb this significantly helps us there imo. We will see about DT and Safety. We just have to have our evals and targets ready for those 2 spots come portal open date…

We prob go one top QB, WR, and Olineman, and a decent TE. Defensively we NEED 2 DTs, a Safety, a Nickel. Probably a Lb and edge too.

I will never understand how EVERYONE saw the issues at DB from a mile away and the coaches who actually see practice, was like "Nah, we gucci".. Everytime I think about it, I smh..

He is at his natural spot. Last year his down year at Auburn their boards say he was playing CB last year which was his wish despite his success the year before at nickel but who knows how true that is.

Dude. Tons and tons of posts, evidence, and debates on this topic. Even then, as I spent all offseason harping on pure fear of our Safety situation, couldn’t have expected what we eventually saw. Never seen anything like that.

2023: Returning starter in the secondary who led the SEC in punt return average (14.8)

Throw him back there with Baby Jesus on punt returns for a November wrinkle.
