Keionte Scott out?

Just play whomever you think will do the best job there (am assuming this is not Isiah Taylor, no disrespect). If it's Poyser we probably see some drop-off in the run game with Fitz at safety. If it's one of our 3 healthy corners, we probably will see a drop off when/if we rotate Antoine/Brantley in as 3rd corner. It's not ideal - especially with OJ out limiting what we have at corner - but between Poyser/a corner we have options. Just get it done and win the game.
I'm hesitant on Poyser at Nickel because I'm hesitant on Fitz as a full-time Safety right at this moment. While I understand Fitz already plays passing downs and has a seemingly good feel in certain coverages, I have watched him struggle with some plays coming at him and filling correctly. It could lead to chunk run plays. Maybe Fitz steps it up (I hope?). Maybe they play the Nickel a bit differently than they did with Scott. Maybe Dylan Day can give us a split of snaps. I have no idea what they have in mind with JRichard. Whatever the case, we'll likely immediately find out against NC State's formations. Hetherman put a ton of weight on Scott.

I think Brown is great in the box b/c he has SOME twitch, can cover and is physical. Richard has showed some nice burst the past couple games in spot duty. But putting Scott's gameplan on their shoulders is a tall task.

Yeah I could see Hetherman trying to mix and match at nickel depending on their formations and down and distance. I have same concerns with Fitz on early downs. Poyser has made some huge tackles in space on runs when the ball carrier has gotten loose, that if he hadn't would have probably gone for a TD. Good point bringing up Richards, could see him playing a fair amount there too.

They tried Brown at Nickel, albeit in a different role, last year and I didn't like those results.

Listen, we have more than most ACC teams in terms of depth. Figure something out. Do the Math of whether moving Poyser is a net negative on the Safety position in early downs. Compare that to what you project from a committee approach. I know Math hasn't been our coaching strong suit. Maybe Hetherman can buck that trend.

Agree, I said the same in a previous thread that it should be Day/Fitz. I think you start Day there because I def trust him more right now to get their skill guys down to the ground. Bring Fitz in on passing downs just like they have been doing.

The nice part - we have bodies to throw at it whereas last year.....oof

I worry Day will commit 100 yards in penalties if he plays 50+ snaps. Am down to try it, but hope Hetherman abandons the experiment before Day racks up 30 yards in penalties. That guy must not sleep and only watches Amari Carter tape for inspiration

This is probably what we will be doing. However I’d also just say on clear passing situations that Fitzgerald would be entering the game why wouldn’t we have one of our top 3 Cbs slide into the nickel spot…

There is just no way that out of
O’Connor, Lucas, OJ (when he returns and for rest of season), Damari, Thomas, Poyser, Fitzgerald, Day, Brantley, Antoine, etc… that we shouldn’t be able to figure out a good plan for 5 DBs on the field. IMO Scott being out is zero excuse. Sure gunna need to change the plan, but we have the talent.

Then again the LB play has been garbage in coverage and Heatherman hasn’t figured that out…

We just have to figure out the nickel that can cover crossing routes and can tackle. NCSt is gunna be implementing Louisvilles gameplan to eliminate our DLine edge, and use their TE more…

Don't think he is a knee replacement doc. Can't expect miracles

I mean Toure being solely a 2 down player would by itself be a positive. That wouldn’t be a miracle
Think it's more an indictment of our lack of talent at LBer than Hetherman. His choices outside of Wes are basically: Toure/Chase Smith/Popo. (Generally lacking in ACLs) Bonner looked like he should be playing JV football against Syracuse. Maybe Pruitt should get burn at LBer on 3rd down, but if they're trying to get him to replace Thomas at Safety next year, I dunno if it helps for him to be bouncing back and forth between Safety and LBer.

Agreed

I’d argue given our talent our LBs are actually playing better than I expected

Let that sink in. That room is rough

Yeah I don't think Hetherman is playing Toure (and Chase to a lesser extent) on passing downs because he thinks it's a good idea. He doesn't really have much choice. I do wish Popo had made more of a leap/Hetherman trusted him more. Would be better if he was a shoe in to be one the 2 LBers on passing downs. He seems to be playing more in those situations lately, but I think that has more to do with Toure getting picked on and Wes being nicked up (also doesn't help that Wes has missed 2+ games because of bs targeting/injury)

The worst thing about Scott being out will be it will give Heatherman, who already loves playing soft all the motivation he needs to play soft cover on a team that's undoubtedly game planning on short and quick drop backs. Heatherman is the only reason our DEs are not leading the nation in sacks.

My biggest fear with Scott out is complimentary football i.e. slow *** tempo and a cloud of dust to protect Scott's replacement.

Ideally, Dawson/Mario play with tempo and aggression consistently like Cam Ward is at QB
