He was great indeed, but "Last great back?"

Two words.........Frank Gore!

1. Willis Mac is definitely my favorite Cane’s RB

2. Had he stayed healthy in the Fiesta Bowl, we wouldn’t be talking about a blown call. We win that game. He was starting to eat up OSU. And his NFL career would’ve been way more productive (although he had a really solid career)

3. He should’ve won the Heisman that yr

4. I wish the dark visors were allowed again. We looked real cool, and intimidating as a team.

Duke is in that group talent wise. Those other guys would have looked "good" if they'd played on the teams Duke did.
Love Duke but no, not in their class. These guys were every down backs in the NFL. Duke has pretty much turned into a slot receiver.

I give zero fcks about the NFL. Duke put up a ton of yards and made otherwise unwatchable teams watchable. He was a great college RB on a crappy team. Had he been on one of the special Miami teams, you'd be putting him in the same group as the greats. Can you really say that he wouldn't have done amazing things behind that 2001 line?

One of my all-time favorites. I sometimes wonder how good Edge, McGahee, and Gore could have been in the NFL if they never tore their ACLs (Gore twice). Gore is going to finish top 5 in rushing despite that. But imagine how good these guys could have been in the NFL. Edge was never the same back.

Duke was great and I loved him. But Duke wasn’t a game breaker like those other dudes. (Outside of the VT game)

IMO
1. Edge
2. McGahee
3. Portis, Gore
It's a beautiful thing that a case can be made for all 4.

In the history of college football, no other program can make an argument that they had a span of 4 straight running backs of this caliber.

Edge is my fave but Willis is my close second... That season in 02 was special... And yet, if gore wasn't hurt willis wouldn't have had that season.... If gore would of played the whole year in 02 like he did in 01, my GOD!!!!!

The team was bad, but Duke Johnson's Junior season was as good as anything other than McGahee's 02 season. He had over 1600 yards rushing and over 2,000 from scrimmage on 6.8 yards per carry. That is no joke.

Look I'm not remotely putting him in the category of anyone mentioned but I still think a healthy Graig Cooper could've been something special too.

That said, if you listen closely you can hear Edge STILL running all over UCLA.

I was born in the late 80’s. So my earliest memories of watching Canes games was the mid-90’s during the probation years. My dad was a Cane fan but his real love was the Dolphins. He didn’t teach me about the Canes glory years. He always talked about Marino and the Fins glory years. However, I just connected more with the Canes. I remember being a fan but it felt like we lost every game I watched. I kept watching. I remember 47-0 vs the Noles.

Edge was my first real glimmer of greatness from the Canes. UCLA was the first big victory for me after many defeats. So no running back will ever come close to Edge. I love McGahee, Portis, and Gore. But Edge is the GOAT!

Apologies... Absolutly correct
Amazing what a string of great backs we had.
Miller was good
Duke was good

But Edge, Portis, Mcgahee and gore was ridiculous
Najah and Jackson were fun to watch too.

I can't imagine what Duke would have been able to do with the O-Line the greats had. Duke is a bit smaller, but no doubt could have had some very special years behind an all out dominant offensive team like some of the rest had.

duke is the most dynamic player on Cleveland’s roster and is putting up crazy receiving stats as a running back. He also has a good yards per carry average in the league too

All Great RBs....but I've said it once...and I'll say it again.....If OJ Anderson played on some later UM teams....there would be Absolutely No argument who was the Best...
His TD run against UF in I think 78...still is a favorite....ran over and through 5 Lizards...
