Jurich

So if I’m understanding this. We want to hire an AD that will make a decision on Diaz but Diaz is already fired. AD will be given the choice of the next football coach but the new money wants Cristobal. Am I’m stupid to think this AD hire will be the new money puppet like Blake was to the old money and this is just a power struggle of whose money is longer?
Well if you have to have a puppet I’d rather have one under the new money that seemingly care about the program and it’s success instead of the old blue hair money that haven’t given a sHT about the program for the last 20 yrs going back to Butch.

If you gotta have one group ,and it looks like you do at UM,I vote for the group that wants to win and not the one worried about squeezing Lincoln’s head off every Penny.

This. I worked for a global Sports Agency and we were hired as consultants for countless projects and insights but wouldn’t dare dictating to the client what they should do.

It sounds like the firm doesn’t want to be associated with Jurich for whatever reason and is distancing themselves.

Or it reeks of some political crap.... wouldn't be surprised if Manny Sr. is cashing in some chips from the proverbial closet from past dealings.

LOL at @DMoney dropping this bomb then disappearing from the thread.

So let me get this straight:

1. New money swiging d*cks wanted Jurich
2. Old guard eunuchs wanted some empty suit that would retain Manny
3. Compromise was search firm would propose candidates
4. Search firm threatens to resign if Jurich is considered

Are we sure this search firm is impartial?

The old guard is DIGGING DEEP to keep the mayor's son in power.
What did anyone expect? This was never going to be easy.

Honestly, I’m getting the flyers prepared at this point. It’s going to get ugly and before I throw my fandom out the window, I’ll at least go down with a fight.

Might be time to fire up the banner plane after all!!

Can we nudge Kirby for a Part Deux??

I’m sure that’s part of it, probably a significant part. I’m not familiar with this particular firm, but the ones I’m familiar with, probably most, are paid a fee by the actual candidates. Whether that’s a flat amount, or percentage of their new position salary, depends on the particular search firm.

Again I’m not privy to their internal workings, I’m just privy to having used them.

To be honest, I never considered them to be an honest broker, nor to have my best interest in mind, my only interest in them was to look at possible candidates and to see if they had a jewel among their stable that was worth the hassle of using them.

I honestly can’t recall if I’ve ever hired someone from a search firm. It’s been a while.

There are also C-suite type, and M&A type searches that use a specialized firm.

About 90% of the time someone internally is hired, either from acquaintances or through networking, or people that actually work for the company changing positions.

To be honest, most of the time, especially in upper management, there is generally an idea of who is wanted for the position, and a lot of time interviewing is just covering your bases for HR type reasons.
Does the university also pay the firm a fee or is it typically just the candidate? I ask because if the money is just coming from the candidates then the search firm may threaten to resign as they would not make any money form an outside candidate.
I always assumed search firms made money on both ends.

I don't know if there's some substantive difference between a "search firm" and a "recruiting firm" when it comes to sports. My sense is there is not, but some discussion on this thread suggests that there might be. Does a search firm get paid hourly/flat fee etc. just to do procedural work like bg checks and such on candidates the Uni presents, or as some % of the annual salary of the position they hire because they are actually doing the initial work of vetting? Both?

Recruiting firms I have worked with in the past get paid the latter way. If this is the case (and I think it is), then I think the most likely explanation is that Jurich is somehow outside their list (perhaps the intro was made by a BOT member working outside, or perhaps prior to, Turnkey's process) and thus they would not get paid if he gets hired.

If they get paid only the former way, there's not really a financial reason why they would prefer one candidate over another; their incentives would be to be as "thorough" (read: take as much time) as possible so they bill more hours. This pay structure doesn't really seem to align incentives very well, so I doubt that's what it is. Maybe it's a combination of the two, but I doubt they are simply doing clerical work for billable hours. Otherwise what's the real value add? Just typing out this scenario makes it seem kind of ridiculous and implausible.

Past history or something like that is maybe a consideration, since I suppose you could make an argument that if something blows up it either reflects poorly on Turnkey or opens them to the potential of liability. Without the contracts we have no way of knowing, but there are certainly ways to reasonably indemnify a search firm if, for instance, it turns out an AD candidate was running a secret meth lab out of their basement or something else that wouldn't come up on a bg check. So I don't think this in and of itself would be an issue if there wasn't already some dispute about money.

I'd not read too much into the diversity stuff on their website. Every company has to make some gesture toward that shvt now. The two guys who work for them who have the college sports placement experience (Chad Chatlos and Gene DiFillipo) are normal white dudes (assuming you consider Jersey italians white...YMMV....).

Bottom line is I think there is an 85%+ chance that this is exclusively about the fact that they wouldn't get paid if Jurich is hired. Whatever residual possibility remains is probably still mainly about the money, combined with reputational/litigation risk that is either real or just an excuse to back out because of the money thing.

EDIT: Should have included the caveat that this response takes the news at face value. I agree with others that I'm not sure the story makes a ton of sense without knowing more context.
Paragraph 2 is exactly my thinking. Search firm more than likely has a list of candidates they prefer for any number of reasons - under contract, salary potential, etc - and wants to maximize their commission. I’ve dealt with search firms on both ends both as a client and a customer and they always tried to steer me in a direction that favored them and not necessarily me.

Keep in mind I'm all for Jurich (or Radakovich). ...(i got the "ich")...

By way of likely explanation, the search firm has already conducted numerous top level searches (for others) for ADs, and Jurich was surely in the candidates pool. They probably already determined he didn't cut the mustard in the initial diligence, so didn't make it to the interview round.

Now Miami comes along looking for an AD and hires them, while saying "we have a few in mind already" (including Jurich.) They say: "nahh, he's already not qualified by our standard criteria" we say well, interview him anyway, they say "nahh" we say "well, we will interview him then to augment your "other" searches" they say "nahh, do that and we quit".

Makes some sense; i don't like it though.

The University pays a fee for the work performed.

I just feel like we are hyping him cause it’s a name I just want a real search and I’m concerned about what happened at Louisville yes his name got cleared but it happened under his watch
Yep If it isn’t an experienced hire, fold the program. He’s hyped up because he’s been successful at multiple sports in our conference

Blake survived Adidas here and Coach L.

If Manny is the head coach next year, there will be no fans left.

For everyone that’s always asking me why I’m so skeptical & why I just won’t throw a parade every time a report comes out that all the Big Money guys have finally turned over a new leaf & Miami is now ready to be a serious program...

This is why lol.

I’d love nothing more than to be a Super-Homer & drink the Orange & Green Kool-Aid, but my brain won’t let me, I’m not dumb enough unfortunately lol.

The people who run the show at this program are a conglomerate of mooncalf's who wake up early in the morning & figure out ways to make the most simplistic processes way more difficult than they’re supposed to be.

Great at business, clueless at sports.

Many insiders have been insinuating that Jurich is the guy but now all of a sudden the news indicates he hasn’t even been formally interviewed? The alleged timeline for an AD hire was early to mid week. Today is Sunday & Jurich hasn’t even been interviewed? Doesn’t seem like there is to be an AD in place if the rumored leading candidate hasn’t even been interviewed?

This is spiraling into a mess. There still appears to be no plan or leadership at the highest levels of the BOT, which we all knew. It sounds like a bunch of people talking & willing to cut checks but contrasting views on how to do it.

With each passing day the odds of Diaz returning seem to be increasing. Everyone has been shouting that “money is no issue” yet he still has a job. Forget a buyout going down on a certain date. Why was he not fired after losing to Florida St if $ was not an issue??? He’s about to hit the road recruiting as an alleged “dead man walking”. Par the course for Miami, we can’t even fire/hire people the right way. This program is bleeding out on the table right now in front of everyone. When will the bleeding stop ???????
It’s becoming clearer and clearer the “insiders” don’t really know anything . They’re just repeating what they’ve been told by their source whether they know it’s actually true or not . At this point they’re being smokescreened or guessing
