JJ and Butch were the best.

Butch and Pete were **** close.

JJ or Butch on their own were not as good (except for JJ’s one amazing trade).
 
Im (barely) old enough to remember that the JJ hire wasn't universally loved. Back then it was AM talk radio instead of message boards. Fans were highly skeptical, and were ready to run himn out of town after '84 and some of the epic defensive meltdowns that year. As others have said, Schnelly's leftovers on staff didn't like him and resented him even being here.
 
I was working Fraser’s baseball camp that summer and they drove JJ over to the baseball field in a golf cart to talk to the campers. All of us college guys didn’t realize we were meeting a legend!

Meh…. Box he was crap…. My bro is a fins fan and he screamed at the TV and at Olivadoti constantly…. Not sure how long he stuck but he was running outta options

“Pretty Meh” is a very gracious way of putting it.

He had zero ability to spot talent.
His bend but don’t break defense made Marino have to score 40 points a game to win.

He was one of the worst long tenured DC’s in the NFL ever.

His delayed LB blitz’s with Zach Thomas never worked and wasted Zach’s strengths.

His defensive adjustments and scheme in the second half against San Diego in the playoffs, in 1994, ruined Marino’s best shot at a SB win.

He was the NFL version of D'Onofrio.
 
I heard some of Jimmy's teams defense did not have a single player running over a 4.8 40...

I believe it, unreal speed on those teams...
