June 5, 1984 - the day that Tom Olivadotti picked up his keys and then dropped his keys (loudly) dozens of times while Jimmy Johnson attempted to speak to the Miami assistant coaching staff for the first time.

In JJ's introductory meeting with Howard's assistants (who he was forced to retain, due to the lateness of his hiring and the fact that we were the got-damned defending national champs), Olivadotti was not happy. It was some kind of a combo of "why didn't I get promoted to HC" and "who the **** is this Jimmy Johnson character".

So during the meeting, he would pick up his car keys and then drop them on the table of floor really loudly. Real passive-aggressive bull****.
 
I remember this like it was yesterday. 40 birthday and it came across the radio. I was like Jimmy who?

Butch was the one sniffing out talent and then evaluating it.

Almost without fail, Butch left on Thursdays - and went after talent. He recruited for Jimmy. When Jimmy left, Jimmy's players were still at UM - which Butch had observed, evaluated, and recruited.

Then, he ended up recruiting for his own team when UM faced so many sanctions we didn't have enough to have a decent scrimmage.

Butch Davis was coaching high school football when Jimmy Johnson hired him, and he coached under Jimmy for 15 years before getting the Miami head job. Learn the words mentor, and mentee.

I wasn't talking about who hired who.

Butch did the heavy recruiting at UM for JJ. Evaluating. Recommending. Recruiting.

Anyone thinks Butch alone wasn't very good?

Butch started from scratch when HE became the UM Head Coach - and gathered the greatest college football team of all time.
