The majority of the class of 2018 is expected to report to Miami this Sunday to officially enroll for the Summer A session and DE/LB Patrick Joyner is no exception.

“I’ll be moving in Sunday morning,” Joyner said. “I’m looking forward to having a great college experience. It feels good to finally turn a childhood dream to a reality.”

Like most schools require of their incoming freshmen, Miami has had Joyner on an off-season workout program since he signed back in December. The South Dade product played his senior season of high school at about 210 pounds and is already noticing the difference in the college level workouts.

“I’ve been lifting and conditioning,” Joyner said. “South Dade doesn’t have the type of workouts Miami has. I’m 6’2" weighing about 225 right now.”

While previously Joyner was pegged to be only an outside linebacker at UM, he says he’ll also be moonlighting at another position part time in his first college season.

“I’ll be playing defensive end in some situations,” Joyner said. “I expect to have a lot of playing time as a freshman.”

The Canes finished the 2018 recruiting cycle with a top 10 class and many of the early enrollees in spring have already shown they deserve to be on the field this season.

“I think this is one of Miami’s best classes ever,” said Joyner of Storm18. “Everyone can make an immediate impact.”

Joyner says he’s kept in contact with coach Ephraim Banda and coach Manny Diaz often over the off-season. What do the two coaches tell him?

“Just come in ready to compete.”

This guy's entire highlight reel was making huge plays at the LOS. Kid reminds me of Corey Moore. VT was able to install a rush end in their base 4-3 defense. So can we.

By the time the season starts, Joyner will be a 235lb pass rush specialist, and he'll end up as the second coming of Toolbox Trent by the time he's done here.

The main difference you’ll see with young developing athletes isn’t necessarily the workouts but moreso the nutrition. Hard to gauge every kids situation at home but having the luxury of being able to have a top flight meal plan for growth is very important.

Besides the playbook and on the field action for early enrollees, nutrition is 1b in importance IMO. Can’t wait to see these guys bulk up. Those 5 extra months really do make a difference in PT.

Makes perfect sense given where we need help right now.

Can’t wait to see what this next wave of talent brings.

Joyner has the skills to fill that role nicely. Not the least bit surprised to hear this. Let's see what he can do.

Does anyone here think Joyner could develop into a full time DE?

Maybe by his sophomore year. It's realistic to think he could get up to 245 after a year plus in the program.

6-2 is less than ideal height. But he could definitely play a role as a pass rush specialist. Why not have him at OLB?

Oh, but I thought he wasn't going to be playing DE in situations according to some on here.

I never got that , he’s a great pass rusher. His film was all rushing the passer. He might not be a full time de , but he’s definitely a hybrid.

I expect him to play lb and then put his hand in the dirt on obvious pass downs.

well they have lined up Terry Mccray at End this spring. We are weak at the position so in some packages he could be able to, will have to wait to see how he moves in practices. A 225pd DE is wayyy to small for big time football..unless they have huge length.

Depends on his play style could be a Trent Harris type though i think he runs better.

Problem is I don't want J Jackson or Garvin not in the game on obvious passing downs unless you want to run Greg in. Maybe he would be effective blitzing from the OLB like Derrick Thomas made a living doing in Kansas City. I'm sure Manny can dial up a designer blitz or two. Thoughts?

There’s 80-100 plays a game , there’ll be a few snaps here and there. But I’m sure he’ll be used from multiple spots. Blitzing off the edge as a lb or rushing from de.

He always looked like a DE to me. With the new hybrid LB/S position and the ‘19 LB class, I’d expect it to be a full time move

Yep. I think our lb rotation looks like this for 2019. Remember that the mlb position us being phased out with Mike Smith graduating and Shaq leaving early.

WLB: Steed, Jennings, Pierre
SLB: McCloud, Wilder, Huff
Striker: Finley, Derrick Smith, Solomon

Brooks and Joyner will play DE roles.
