Josh Pate sat down with Mario Cristobal during spring practice to discuss spring practice, last season and more. A transcript of that conversation is below.

Josh Pate: The last time most of America saw you was the end of the national championship game. Very briefly, as a human being, how long did it take before you were able to say, “All right, 2026 season, let’s go?”

Mario Cristobal: It’s a quick turn of the page because you’re already behind on every aspect of recruiting...

If you don’t like Mario Cristobal, you aren’t a fan of UM football. This guy lives it at a level that us onlookers can’t even imagine.
The perfect type of CFB coach, its that Saban Butch type. No nonsense recruit the best and work, outsiders will slander them and say people hate them but players choose them. To me those narratives die when players go to play for them, it means they have charisma and players care about them.

Very well put. Straight forward coaches who love their work and treat players with respect. I don’t get into the whole “player’s coach” nonsense becasue players jsut want good coaches who treat them well. They don’t want coaches as friends or to hang out. And they don’t want someone who insults players because the coach is insecure (behind every unnecessary insult is insecurity).

And know how to get the player to hr next level if the player is willing to make the sacrifices for that. I like that UM prepared highlight reels of all its players at senior day for the teams to see. Promote your players and asst coaches to others. MC does a great job of both as his comments about Dawson show.

His ability to repeat the exact same lines in every interview is impressive lol
It’s not an act, however. That is just how Mario’s brain works. As I always write, he is a grinder. Grinders do the same tihngs over and over agin because they believe they can outwork any and everyone. But it do that, the person must be singularly focused. Mario says the same things over and over becasue he thinks those things over and over.

But he is also innovative. See his comments about the research into how pro teams handle off seasons after long playoff runs.

Lot of this should be going on.

Love the work he/we are doing analyzing extended seasons and how to approach the following year
- ESPECIALLY looking at other leagues

Go Canes
