Chip Kelly is the OC at Northwestern and he’s Ryan Day mentor. Imagine said he had a better chance to compete for PT there, while having the opportunity at a great degree
Did Chip Kelly and Day get along? Just curious because I told myself the son choose Northwestern out of pure disdain for his father for looking like one of the dudes Chris Hanson barges in on holding a brown paper bag with condoms, *** toys and Just for Men Hair and Beard kit

To the folks that think Ryan Day’s kid went to NW for a better degree, did you not know that football player curricula choices and regular undergrad curricula choices are not the same?

While there is an occasional exception to the rule, football players are given about four choices for a major - communications, glorified PE, liberal arts and general business. To quote Butch Davis, “you didn’t come here for an education; you came here to play football. If you wanted an education, you should’ve gone to Harvard.” That quote is 15+ years old, back when players had to actually go to class.

Is there a timetable here? Mario being the chess guy that he is, wonder if we see an announcement this upcoming weekend ?

That's incorrect. I went to Northwestern for undergraduate and I had football players in my fraternity, in my dorm, in my classes ( several come including a few who went pro, were economics Majors as well as I). Players lived the same lives as any other student. One that went second round in the draft used to be the hall monitor at night.

That’s like saying the Notre Dame LT and Stanford RT are Finance majors. You’re talking outliers which isn’t the norm.

You pull the majors of “most” p4/Notre Dame players and you’ll find exactly what buddy described.

There are several factors at play here and I want to keep this polite.

First off, when did your experience happen?
I was recruited by Northwestern in the early 90's, so I'm not out of my mind on this topic. Northwestern has traditionally been to the B1G what Vanderbilt has been to the SEC. I mention this because while I think your commentary has merit, times have changed enough that when your experience happened matters. When I was recruited, what you said stands...sort of. Today though?

More to the point I was trying to make.... If Day's kid was good enough to play at a high level, he (almost certainly) would. The idea that kids still pick "schools" based on academic merit is a crock of **** for the most part. To be clear, I'm talking higher level recruits with NFL ambitions. RJ Day is 100% NOT an elite recruit. First off, he's listed at 5'11" on his 247 profile. He's a 3 star, 84 rated kid. That means he got recruited by second tier schools like Northwestern, BC, Cincy (ahem), Purdue, Syracuse. He also likely was offered by those schools as a courtesy to his dad. If you don't think that happens, well.... you're not sane.

Essentially what I was trying to convey in my original message (and failed) was that RJ Day is not an elite recruit and he settled for the best option he had available. Saying RJ chose NW for a better education is straight cope...or bullschitt as my fellow Gen X'ers would call it. That may be the company line or what his handlers are putting out there, but the fact is if Ohio State or another top tier program without the academic prestige that NW carries offered, he would be there. (see Cooper Barkate) So while I'm not disputing what you wrote - substitute Northwestern for Harvard in the Butch quote (which is a 100% real quote btw) - and my point stands. Shame on me for not better explaining that originally.

I hope you read that message without inferring any sneers, snideness, saltiness or disrespect.

I was there 93-97, so about the time you apparently were being recruited. Clearly you have some experience here, and I certainly dont take your response as any sort of disrespect (nor did I mean any with mine). I just wanted to get across that the players, at least the ones I came across, did take school seriously. I've no doubt that there are some that are there for football and could care less about classes, but many did care about the academics and being part of the community there. Thats all...
Btw, what was your impression of Barnett? I always liked him but have heard some mixed things.

Chip Kelly is basically like the kid’s uncle.

I had a close friend at Michigan who was on the football team and very smart (ultimately went to Michigan law school). But even for him he said it was like pulling teeth to convince the coaches to let him take the classes he wanted as opposed to the classes they wanted him to take, with the “right” professors.

On the flip side, I loved walking into class on the first day and seeing athletes. I know right then I had unwittingly signed up for an easy class with the right professor, and I was almost assured of an A. After all, if the athletes were to receive a B, then an A had to be well within reach. I only wish this happened more often and on purpose rather than by accident.

Francis Peay was the coach then. I’m a couple years older than you. Northwestern was still the perennial basement team of the B1G in football then and was closer to an Ivy than a Big Ten school (there were only ten teams in the conference then so I’m spelling that out).

Remember when teams used to list the players’ majors with their name during the tv intros? They don’t do that anymore. The schools also used to list their majors on their roster pages. That stopped about 5-10 years ago. Why? I suspect too many people like me were looking through the rosters at the majors and couldn’t clearly see that anyone who didn’t have liberal arts, communications, Kinesiology/Exercise Science as their majors were walk-ons.

Lastly, the Butch Davis quote is 100% fact. I have a family member who played under him and heard it directly. Butch wasn’t unique like that.
