Dude, OP is saying that only a good QB can be a competent QB coach. No one is defending Jon Richt; we are simply saying that a QB coach didn’t have to be a star when he played in order to be a competent coach.

I get it, bro, but lets keep it specific to Richt Jr. though. He is bringing up Hall of Fame Coaches as his litmus test for his argument when in fact, Jr is nowhere near those coaches in ability. If we keep it to Jr, Jr was a below average QB in college at a JV program. He has proven to be inept at QB coach for our program. While I agree that some coaches could have been mediocre CFB players before there coaching days and still be stellar coaches, Jr obviously is not 1 of those type of dudes.

No problem with little Johnny Rickets here at Miami. I have a HUGE problem with him being part of the on field staff. He's taking a spot. Should have been brought on as a GA working in the film room or getting head sets ready for game day while working on an advanced degree IF he was the most qualified candidate for this type position.

You have to be joking with your lazy attempt at protecting a beyond mediocre position coach on our team...C'mon man...Jr is trash...absolute trash.

I can't speak for anyone else, but the point he seemed to be making was that OP implied only good QBs could be good QB coaches. That's not defending anyone, it's pointing out the hypocrisy of the OP.

So we don’t think it’s relevant at all that he couldn’t grasp playing the position himself?
Knowing how to do something and teach it, and being able to do it yourself is the difference between coaching and playing. Many top hitting instructors in MLB were lousy hitters. It holds true in all sports.

Oh.

I thought only guys who were all-world QBs themselves could develop other QBs.

Not neccessarily, but the guy who created Miami as QB U lead the Colts to Super Bowl III and the 73 Dolphins to the only undefeated perfect season in NFL history, so I’d doesn’t hurt. If fact he was Mark’s QB coach. I guess that shows thT even he couldn’t make anyone a great QB.

That’s the exception to the rule and you know it. Don’t play dumb with me, pal

Not defending him but that was his first year. He actually had decent numbers his last few years and got invited to some NFL camps. I’ve got friends and former teammates that played on the same team as him. I’m about an hour from Mars Hill

He actually holds several records there for passing on a team that basically ran a triple option/ wing t before he got there

He threw for nearly 3000 yards and 25 TDs. Averaging almost 300 yards per game in 2012.

That being said... who gives a **** what his playing stats were. He can’t coach but that has nothing to do with it

Give it a break. Leave your mother's basement & get a job.

Mike Leach also spent years at places like Cal Poly, College of the Desert, and Valdosta St.

He didn’t spend a year getting Rex Ryan donuts in Buffalo before becoming a QB Coach at a major P5 school.

So what I take from this thread is Malik will be the next qb coach . Jorn makes him look like brees
