John Jancek

Fires him a couple years ago. Hires him now? Makes a lot of sense.

Would be a "meh" move. Wouldn't hate it. Wouldn't love it. But it would truly be unprecedented that a HC fires an assistant at one school then rehires him at another school.

Lets just hope that he has gotten better since that point

It seems like our board only brings up people who richt has fired

Tennessee defense looked good this year but I don't think this is our guy for the above mentioned reason

It "looks" good based on what? The one game versus Northwestern?

I remember people saying how nasty our defense looked against Duke last year, how "Al changed the defense".....when a team full of southern black dudes plays a nerd school with mostly white cats, it usually looks like that.

Northwestern is a gigantic toilet offensively. Many teams did what UT did to them this year.

I think Turbeville did this with John Lovett at Auburn, and later hired him at Texas Tech.
But you're right, it is kind of rare when it happens.

Last point seems like a similar excuse we heard here.

I'll trust Richt I guess.

That's not an excuse. It's a statement of fact. I was at a coaching clinic about 10 years ago and the guest speaker was Frank Beamer. He pulled out stats that showed the odds of from different areas of the field. Failing to convert and close out games puts constant pressure on your defense. Sooner or later something has to give. Butch Jones is recruiting his *** off. Tennessee should be favored to win the SEC East next year. Jancek has done a very good job.

I would be surprised if it's Jancek.

Or, held Alabama to their season low. Not exactly "a nerd school with mostly white cats."

They had the 46th defense in the nation, in his third season there. At an SEC school that has been recruiting well, in a **** division.

How is this in any way something to be desired at UM???

Official NCAA Stats (From NCAA site)- Scoring Defense (16th): Tied with Clemson (16th), ahead of Oklahoma (28th), ahead of Michigan State (26th). They were equal or better than 3 of the playoff teams. I would venture to say at least two of those teams have more talent than UT.

I'm reading them as having the #25 scoring defense. Aka, they are a bend a ton and break sometimes defense, no different from what we have seen here for about 9 seasons.

I'm not interested in a coach who's defense is "kind of ok". We have an opportunity to hire an elite guy, so we can get back to playing Cane football. The goal isn't to be "better than Dono" it's to be elite.

Jancek might be the best we can do at this point in terms of proven college DCs.

I still think Richt looks to the NFL.

I used cfbstats.com for this information

Things of note:
-They haven't had any 5 star recruits (Defensively), with the exception of 1 DT who was a FR this year.
-They have gotten maybe 2-3 recruits every year since 2010 who are top 15 in their position, mostly DE's, and some top 5 players from JUCO, some left before he came.
-Has shown improvement, but still not elite in TD's allowed and Rushing Y/G.
-Has gotten slightly worse every year in takeaways.

Edit: Yes, this is all defensive stats, as in Rushing/Passing/Total yards ALLOWED P/G

Then it's a massive failure of the new HC. He essentially had one critical hire to make: get a top tier DC here. With him calling the offense, his only critical hire was DC. Bringing in a guy like Jancek is a gigantic failure.

According to football outsiders rankings...
Tenn Defense
2013: 64
2014: 38
2015: 50

I agree, this is not someone I want...he could probably have a defense here ranked around top 15-25 at best....not ideal

Good coach in the SEC, SOS #34 and lost by 5 to Alabama only giving up 19 points.

Ah don't you love anecdotes? His numbers are mediocre across the board, and he's in his third season. Would be an awful hire and fans would hate watching his defense give up over 400 yards a game.

Solid find and work.

im not sure it was ever going to be aranda anyway. as has been mentioned, Kool is a 4-3 guy. Aranda is a 3-4.

regardless its a "meh" move. all I heard is how we have big splash $ now. if thats true then give me a tidal wave.
