Joe Jackson declares for draft

Wish he stayed but that’s me being selfish. He had a solid career here and good luck to him in the show.

Never can blame a kid when he leaves when he is a lock first 3 round pick. It is the kids like Norton that do dumbass moves that **** me off.

Good for him. One of the few guys in recent history who are actually ready. Best of luck to the guy.

I could see late 2nd through mid 4th. Nice player but his stock declined this season while so many other players rose sharply. For example, watch the Clemson or Mississippi State defensive linemen. Those are men, not boys. Completely different how those frames look compared to someone like Jackson. How is a team supposed to consider Jackson when players like Montez Sweat are out there? That's the type of player you are competing against for late first round this year, and Jackson simply isn't on that level.

2019 is an exceptionally deep draft for defensive linemen. I think too many fans are assigning typical distribution. That's why they assume Jackson might go high. This year is anything but typical. There are at least twice as many top rated guys as the norm at those positions. Even if the league does value those positions there are simply so many to choose from this year. The kid who just declared from Florida will be picked ahead of Jackson.

I think right now, the narrative is you're going to see a huge number of iDL being taken early because there are certainly a lot of good ones.

However, in most years, you're going to see on average 10 iDL going before the end of Round 3 (with a high of 14 going a few years ago). In a good year 4 iDL players are going in R1. Right now, there are three first round projected 1T iDL alone (Brown, Davis, Lawrence). The NFL doesn't value that position enough for THREE of them to go in R1. Then you have another 4-5 3T projections going in R1...again, an abnormally high number I don't think will hit. Some of those iDL are going to slide into Round 2 as you see a natural value rise in the QBs and the WR class figures itself out. End of R1 is always a nice catch-all for OL and DB, not so much for iDL. With that said, after the big ticket iDL (Williams, Oliver, Gary) are off the board, it wouldn't shock me to see a limited number of them go in R1. Maybe a couple more, but it won't be an overwhelming number.

tl;dr - a lot of the iDL players being projected to go R1 right now won't end up as R1 players.

Now, as for EDGE, where Jackson fits in...I don't think there is an abnormal distribution of talent this year. Looks..."normal" to me. There are on average, roughly 10-12 EDGE players taken in the first three rounds annually and it wouldn't shock me if we are in that range again this year which, would put Jackson in the Top 3 rounds. He's definitely not a first rounder, but I'd be shocked if he wasn't taken by the end of Round 3 by a team that is in a more traditional 43 alignment. He's a good player. Not sure I would put him head to head with Montez Sweat...not sure there are teams that would be legitimately interested in both.

I think Jackson is your typical 60-90 type pick barring some injury I don't know about, some illness, etc.

Yup. There's a big difference in potentially leaving some to even a decent amount of money on the table versus pretty much leaving ALL the money on the table.

If a kid thinks he can *realistically go in the first 3 rounds or if he's a running back then I usually say more power to him.

If a kid and his family want to believe fantasies and pipedreams that any nefarious characters want to whisper in their ears when everyone else is telling them otherwise then I almost have a hard time feeling sorry for them when Mr. Irrelevant is taken and said nefarious characters are then telling then how it's actually better to be an UFA.

This shouldn't surprise anyone. And, while I really like what Patchan brings as a 4th guy in a rotation, I still believe we need a grad transfer to become the 3rd guy. Rousseau is special. If healthy, I think that'll play out fine. Garvin is already a star. Go get a strong side type.

(Not to mention a grad transfer DT, too)
I hope they don’t do to Garvin what they did to Joe this past year - beef him up to play strong side. I’m not sure if this happened cause we had no other viable options at SDE, if Joe naturally grew, whatever. All I know is I preferred him wreaking havoc from the WDE position.

I expected him to be a nightmare this year, forcing opposing DCs to scheme against him. While he had a nice season, he looked way more explosive his Fr and So seasons. Obviously he vastly improved against the run, and was a key cog on an site defense... I just personally preferred him at WDE. Either way, excellent player who should be an impact player at the next level.

But seems like Rousseau is the WDE, meaning odds are Garvin slides over. I just feel like you lower his ceiling by doing that.

Right decision should be at the lowest day 2 pick but ultimately I see Him as a top 50 pick
I know he'll do well in the NFL, but I fear he won't be drafted until the 4th or 5th round because this draft is deep with lineman. It's not just the guys at his position, it's all the othe positions that teams have a need for.

I think Rousseau will play Chad Thomas' role. Thing is we've done so many different things with our front, it's hard to comment as if it were a traditional 4 down line look.

At least, I think he would’ve been the first DE off the board next year. Could potentially be a 15-20mil swing. He’ll ball regardless he’s a competitor

Unless he gets a career ending injury (neg away just the reality)

He should have stayed one more year. When he was a frosh he looked like 1st round talent.

His arm issue really hampered him this year. The 2019 DL draft class is loaded. I really feel he could have balled out healthier next year and gone much higher in the draft.

That said, i can't judge him too much for leaving. His makes more sense than a lot who left early in recent years.

I havent seen Rousseau play, but I have a hard time believing he is going to take on double teams as a true soph coming off an injury. And again, wasn;t his splash plays in spring ball as an edge rusher? That gets somewhat neutralized at SDE. I have to think its Garvin in Chad's role.
