Joe Echevarria on Pat McAfee

That’s not the origin of suntan U.

Suntan U was about kids from the northeast going to Miami… with the beach and suntan being the attraction rather than the academics.
As I'm told, folks would legitimately lie out in the grass in front of the academic buildings.

When I attended, I didn't see that, but I did see some enormously fat squirrels.

Yeah my pops was there from 64-70 (2 degrees lol… no Cam McCormick jokes).

I think that’s absolutely true.

My pops was there in the mid 70s. Very different place back then, or so he claims. Heck, I go to campus now and it's totally different than when I attended.

God bless the U.
I graduated in the early 2000’s and it’s vastly different even from 25 years ago.

And now they are about to tear down and replace my freshmen dorm, Pearson.

Suntan U
Us older alums remember that moniker. In fact if I remember right you could but Suntan U t-shirts in the bookstore.
Not too long after I left the powers that be decided that it wasn't the type image they wanted so Suntan U slowly disappeared.

I believe it was also the academic reputation. Once UM started winning in football, it raised the number of students that wanted to attend, which also increased the academic level of student that applied. Helped make it rise in academic rankings.
100%
That 2017 season started it.

Hadn't heard the University of Miami being called Sun-tan U before lol that is great. We are in such good hands with Joe Echevarria. He understands how critical elite athletics are to the university and that athletics made the U! Awesome interview.

It's almost like people want to hear what they want to hear, and ignore important context. What Echevarria said was that The U LOGO was built on athletics, which is accurate. The reason the school started using The U outside of an athletics context is because it's recognized everywhere and is very distinctive. We could use the school seal, most people have no idea what it is and why it matters. The old University of Miami wordmark suffered from the same issue, people didn't care, it was just a wordmark.

Note that he didn't say that the University itself was built on athletics, because no University has ever been built solely on athletics. It's not an either/or situation, I'm proud that my alma mater is one of the few schools in the country that actively tries to be world class in both academic achievement, AND athletics. I'm also happy that the powers that be understand that while athletics is important(and should have the appropriate level of support and funding), there is absolutely no reason to undersell the actual purpose of an institution of higher learning and that's to educate future generations of leaders.

I'm quite sure someone that climbed the ranks at Deloitte understands the value of very well educated, intelligent people.

He was great on this segment. Funny, intelligent and really represented the ACC and Miami .

The conference needs to get rid of Phillips - or make sure he's just a "suit" and says nothing. People like Joe need to do all the talking
Pretty sure he already says nothing.

My daughter was a freshman in 2012. When she was accepted and told some of her HS teachers, one of them was horrified and said "You're going to Sun Tan U?" Admission standards at that time were pretty tough; he had no idea.

They also realized it wasn't sustainable. Tough to build a school around underachieving northerners that couldn't get into anywhere decent north of the Mason/Dixon line. President Stanford started the transition, then Foote and Shalala expanded on that vision. President E is just the latest addition, I hope that he brings back some of the affordability measures that Frenk got rid of(mostly because he didn't fundraise worth a ****). It's shameful that financial aid isn't nearly as plentiful as it once was. With his background, I think he will do what needs to be done to insure that we have a student body that reflects the city and this nation...

As one of those kids, this is spot on.

During my time at UM in the mid-60s, the old Student Union was totally razed and the new one was built on the site. Along with the adjacent Swimming Pool and Diving Tower.

Right before Christmas break, you'd see loads of students out on the various lawn areas with their Hawaiian Tropic SunTan lotion (no SPF at all) and those silver reflectors that focused the sun rays full power onto your face. Wanting to deepen their tans to show off back home to family and friends. No concern whatsoever for skin cancer. Ah, the good ole days?

He makes a great point about collective bargaining needed for the players. A lot of people will resist that, but I agree that you cannot go forward without CBA.

A collective bargaining agreement allows the schools of conferences in the players to agree on how to manage the transfer portal, NIL, and revenue sharing with the athletes fairly across the board.
