Yeah, TAMU has been a “coach away” for 80 years. It’s just a coincidence that nobody has ever been able to win there. It’s also just a coincidence that the major Florida programs have won 11 of the last 34 national titles and the Texas schools have one title in the last 40. Cause, ya know, the recruiting bases are better for TAMU than FSU.
It's coaching. I don't think you've fully considered that Bobby Bowden was a once-in-a-lifetime coach for FSU. He was one of the best that ever did it. Jimbo was his OC and just kept the train rolling.
I think FSU is about to enter their own Randy Shannon era. Miami didn't used to think coaching mattered either.
Texas and California absolutely produce just as much talent as Florida. As many kids from Texas play in the NFL as do kids from Florida. So it's all about how those kids are coached up. From Businessweek: "California leads the way with 300 players in the NFL, followed closely by Florida (266) and Texas (256)."
A&M joined the SEC only a couple years ago, so I don't know why you're worried about what happened 80 years ago. They were always the small fish in UT and OU's pond, but that's no longer the case as anyone from the state of Texas can tell you. However you feel about the SEC, being in that league has turned them from being second fiddle to being a marquis program in this region.
A&M is a good coach away. You can believe it or not, it doesn't make a lick of difference to me. I can't stand Texas A&M. I'm just calling it as I see it.
And by the way... I think Jimbo is garbage anyway, and Texas A&M won't win **** with him. But that's neither here nor there.
You do realize that Texas is 4 times the size of Florida? So it's also not exactly always a morning drive to visit a handful of 4 or 5 star kids like it is in Florida. Also, you can predict that A&M is a "coach away" and make the comparisons to how bad coaching (and some other factors) kept Miami irrelevant but at the end of the day A&M has NEVER been there so it's not like Jimbo would be bringing them "back".
I see them as the Oklahoma State of Texas. Plenty of money, kind of in fertile recruiting grounds.....but always destined to be a little sister to the big boys they're surrounded by. So far many many years of history agrees.
Bro, I live in Texas. I know. Used to live in Miami. I know that area too.
Both Houston and Dallas are bigger cities than Miami, and despite what you saw on that Friday Night Lights movie or whatever, most of the prospects in Texas are in those two cities. A&M is an hour away from Houston and 1 1/2 hours away from Dallas. Oh, and an hour away from San Antonio. Yeah, you can recruit all the 4/5 star kids you need in just a short drive.
Oh by the way, the drive from Tallahassee to Miami is farther than the drive from Texas A&M's campus to New Orleans, another hotbed of talent.
We're not comparing Texas A&M to UM (where talent is 10 minutes away), we're comparing it to FSU. And yeah, they have about the same access to local talent... maybe even giving an edge to A&M.
Oklahoma State is out in the middle of rural ****ing nowhere. It's an 8 hour drive to Houston. Not the same thing at all.
This is going to venture into pure opinion-land and to be borderline defending the FSU job (which I certainly have no interest in doing) and you doing the same for A&M (which you said you can't stand) so I'll just end this on my end by saying my only position is that I'd rather recruit in Florida and at a school that has won something under multiple coaches.
IF the latest reports are true that he'd be getting upwards of $75 mil over a 10 year deal then pure $$$ and not an apples to apples situation seems to be more at play here.
But that's the thing. FSU is barely in Florida. South Florida is a totally different world from the panhandle.
And FSU has won under Bowden and under Bowden's OC. Bobby Bowden was a hall of fame type coach... that's my point. Bowden MADE them. Go read about how great FSU was before Bowden came along. Hint: they were flaming garbage.
FSU hasn't had their Shannon and Golden era yet. They maybe just finished up their Larry Coker era. I predict that program is going down the tubes. Especially if they hire the "get on the bus" guy.
