Jeremy Pruitt to Tennessee

Taggart actually has HC experience... Pruitt is a guarantee fail of a hire for any program.

He was like UTs 100th best choice?? Desperation hire.

you think willie taggart is a better coach than Pruitt ahahhahahahahhaha

Great hire on paper. He certainly is a great D coordinator and recruiter but we'll see how it goes as HC

Great hire. FSU defense fell off noticeably after he left.

Was that because of him? Or because they hired a hack to be DC and lost a lot of talent? I ask, because their defense in 2012, the year before Pruitt's only year at FSU, was basically the same statiscally as Pruitt's defense in 2013. FSU also averaged 51.6 points per game on offense in 2013, which helps the defense a little. I'm not saying Pruitt isn't a good coach, I just don't think he's God.

They had a ton of returning talent in 2014, too.

Pruitt inherited a Top 5 defense but he made them the #1 defense. And they won a ring. Not much more you can do.

The guy can coach and is next level as a recruiter. I heard he works like a psycho, too.

Seems like UT's problems run deep. Even if hes very good, might take years to get back if t all. Dysfunctional program, boosters and fanbase.

Beast defensive coordinator but no head coaching experience. Tennessee thinks he could be like Kirby smart just because he coached with Saban. That takes some stones by Tennessee.

It's called scraping the bottom of the barrel. What other options did they have?

Any one who didn't thank Fulmer was going to make a solid hire under estimate that country boi.

Same hire every SEC team makes every offseason... an Alabama coordinator. Trying to out Saban the real Nick Saban with someone from his staff. No former coach under him has ever beat Saban. SEC schools need to realize that and do something different. That’s why Malzahn wins... he’s different.

I thought leach would have been a good hire then they fire their AD as he’s set to sign the best coach he’d been trying to hire. That offense could have gave them something unique in the SEC. might have been their only shot at beating Alabama and Georgia

Yea, Kriby's been a huge bust in Athens.

For every Kirby there's a Macelwian. And a Muschamp. Also a Strong, a Kiffin, and a Shannon.

Maybe those guys weren't "elite" per se, but each of them was respected as an assistant, and sucked it as a HC. Point is, being a great assistant doesn't have a lot to do with how good a HC you are.

And don't yell at me about Shannon, it wan't until after he sucked as a HC that people decided his defenses weren't that great.

This is utter and complete nonsense. Many coordinators go on to be great head coaches:

Jimmy Johnson
Bob Stoops
Mark Richt
Steve Spurrier
Pete Carroll
David Shaw

What's nonsense is the idea that head coaches are scary because they're offensive/defensive masterminds. That's what makes a great OC/DC, not HC.

What you want in a coach is management skill and charisma- the ability to motivate and make people want to be part of what you're doing. If you don't have that, the rest doesn't matter. Chip Kelly isn't going to win a NC because people don't like him that much. He'll have trouble getting along with boosters and attracting top kids. He'll do well, but I'm not worried about seeing him in the CFP. Same with Leech...put him at whatever school you want, he'll never win a NC.

This is a moving the goal posts and changing the argument post.

Simply there is no blue print to follow or mold that makes a successful coach or not at a specific place. You have offensive/defensive masterminds be successful.....you have CEO types be successful, you have guys who pay their dues at stepping stone programs, you have guys who make the jump directly from an assistant to big time programs. You have Type A and Type B personalities, you have players coaches and bully coaches.

You can come up with a list of successes and failures for every type of scenario.

PS: When that fluke play happened in the Auburn/Oregon National Title game that led to Auburn winning in the last minute.....was that because people didn't like Chip Kelly and he didn't get along with boosters. Nobody likes Saban and he can't get along with anyone....so why does that apply to Chip Kelly and not Saban?

What you said is fair, maybe I'm moving the posts. I still think there's a leadership ability that makes a HC successful and it got nothing to do with having a great football mind.

As for saban, he's a complete *****. But for whatever reason, he's able to convince kids to play for him and he's able to get the best out of enough of them to do a ton of winning. Sure boosters drop bags, but so do other programs. In the end he had to be able to convince top talent to come to bama or he wouldn't be where he is.

It seems like chip did a lot of winning because he's got a great football mind, but I don't think he's got the leadership/charisma to go with it. If he did, his Oregon teams would have been more successful. Maybe he'll kill it, but until I see proof I'm assuming he's not going all the way.

Why are you worried about who coaches FSU?

Elite defensive coach and one of the best recruiters in the country

Know who usually sucks as a HC? Elite offensive/defensive coordinators. You'll see, Tennessee's not done...there's plenty of fuel in that dumpster.

and UGA coming back down to reality after this season. UGA playing with 80% (most of the starters and some of the reserves) richts team.

Dont fall for the banana in the tail pipe. UGA wont be around at this level next 2 years
Have you seen the class Kirby's hauling in? Almost as elite as ours.

This. After seeing that quick list, Krypto had to change his theory.

I don't think I changed my theory at all. I still maintain that there's nothing about being a great coordinator that makes you a great coach. If that wasn't clear from the start, then maybe I didn't make my point correctly.

I'm not super familiar with some of those guys, but here goes:

JJ- I would argue he was successful because he realized that speed could be more important than size and convinced the right guys to play for him. Was he a great play caller? I'm honestly not sure, I'm asking. I think his charisma is what made him great. In the NFL he was able to get great players and have them respect him.

Mark Richt- Most of what I hear is about how he's *** at playcalling. I don't know if that's true, we don't have players who can execute to a level that allows us to judge yet. What I do know is that he's a guy who can make a connection with kids and get them to buy into what he's doing. Again, I would argue that's why he's successful not play calling.

Pete Carroll- Like JJ, he's able to get players at any level to like and believe in him, and that's why he's been successful. Maybe he's a football genius, but it's the charisma that makes it work.

This was his record at Oregon.

10-3 (Rose Bowl Lost) Finished #11
12-1 (BCS NCG Lost) Finished #3
12-2 (Rose Bowl Won) Finished #4
12-1 (Fiesta Bowl Won) Finished #2

How could anyone have been more successful at Oregon? What should his teams been in your mind if that record should have been more successful? It was Oregon, not Bama or Miami or OSU or USC with some tradition of winning National Championships, it was Oregon.

They had only won the Pac12 3 times since 1957. He did it 3 times in a row.
They had 1 top 5 finish in the schools history(2001). He did it 3 times in a row.

To claim that Oregon should have been more successful is just silly.

For what ever reason you have hard on for Chip Kelly....But you can't claim he won't win big because he lacks leadership/Charisma/He's an ***, etc........when the 2 greatest coaches in America....Belicheck and Saban are the exact same.

UCLA may not be a program that he can win the National Title at......no history of that school proving it can be at that level......but its history and caliber of recruit will be much better than Oregon's and he got them on the cusp of one.
