"I thought we'd have many more sacks under his tutelage."
This type of misconception drives me insane. It's an aspect of Fandom that I've never been able to understand. This idea that an outstanding, Hall of Fame level player will automatically be able to turn his players into clones of himself is one of the most ludicrous ideas out there and the fact that it still persists is confounding to me. This idea that if Barry Sanders coached running backs then that unit would be expected to lead whatever league in rushing yards and explosive running plays is what I'm referring to.
Not only does this have no factual basis in reality but often superstar players who get into coaching find it to be frustrating and their coaching to be ineffective. There is so much more to actual coaching than the coaches personal accomplishments/accolades. You can coach fundamentals, you can make leaning fun and enjoyable you can be a great motivator and an innovative schemer and make a player the best version of themselves possible, but a coach cannot create or put into a player what the good Lord did not.
It just so happens that Coach Taylor is an excellent young position coach with a bright future ahead of him as a potential DC and perhaps beyond. He also has a great deal of talent to work with. However he won't automatically coach his DL into leading the nation in sacks just because he is an NFL Hall of Fame DE. He can coach a DL who does that by being a demanding yet fair coach who motivates, emphasizes fundamentals and teaches the finer points/techniques of the position in a way thst players can understand and put into action.
Memo to
@fraggle
Coach Taylor is a very good coach and he and the DL are doing just fine. Have you not noticed the play of Tyler Baron and Elijah Alston? Have you not noticed that Rueben Bain has been out thus far? Have you not noticed that Akheem Mesidor who had been expected to play the majority of his snaps at DE has been playing much more at DT? Have you noticed the play of rising redshirt freshman DE Malik Bryant? Do you know that the rest of the depth at the position consists of.....DEs
Cole McConathy
Marquis Lightfoot
Armando Blount(DE for now)
Booker Pickett Jr
Elias Rudolph
All of whom are true freshmen???
Did you know that in two games this defense has 8 sacks? Did you know thst puts us on pace for 48 this season? Relax friend. Everything is going well thus far.
