Jarren Williams

A little premature to make any assumptions until the teams go live, but I love the kids confidence. I’m a Tate homer...not going to lie due to the accolades and winning mentality, but with Jarren turning up I’m warming up to the idea of him at the helm. Let the best man win!

What do you want from me? I crowned Jarren's *** just last week.

Here's a synopsis:

It's an interview with Jarren's HS coach. Jarren doesn't want to talk about last year but the coach knew how frustrated he was that he was never given a shot to prove himself, even when Malik and Kosi were struggling. He did gain about 30 lbs last year and seriously contemplated putting in for a transfer in late fall. CMR and Jon talked him out of it. He didn't really want to leave but he didn't want to continue to sit and be frustrated.

He was prepped to be the #2 guy for the pinstripe Bowl - Kosi was not going to play as discipline. He was told he would get in the game. The CMR put Kosi in and Jarren, as we know, got no snaps. That's when he came the closest to leaving. In the words of his coach - 'closer than close". He had numerous schools who had offered him in HS keeping track of him last year - not just Ohio State and Kentucky. Coach intimated there were numerous other Power 5 schools also interested. Williams was one of the first calls Diaz made when he took the job and promised that he would be able to come in fresh and get a fair shot. Williams chose to believe him.

New offensive coordinator Dan Enos hasn’t asked him to change anything at all in his mechanics and said he was really impressed by his footwork, his arm and how much time he’s been spending in the building during his off time.

“The main thing with Coach Enos I heard from him in terms of my mechanics is when we get to the top of our drops, just drop my shoulder and step up in the pocket,” Williams said.

The only thing that has challenged him thus far, Williams said, has been learning the terminology in Enos’ offense.

He’s also getting used to relaying play calls in the huddle and taking snaps under center. In high school, Williams relayed plays off signals from the sideline and took nearly all of his snaps in the shotgun.

“I’ve done it, but I’ve never really done it in the game,” Williams said of being under center. “I’ve always been in the spread. So, it’s been fun taking those different drops and doing those different hand offs and just learning and getting better and preparing for that next level.

Bottom line: kid is all in on winning the job

The article was basically saying in the words of his high school coach that he was upset and wanted to transfer because he didn’t feel he was given a legit shot at the starting job. He was also set to be the backup in the Pinstripe bowl with N’Kosi being disciplined but he never saw the field.

Jarren stated that Diaz called him and told him he has a clean slate and a fair chance to win the job which also helped keep him around. He now feels he has a legitimate chance to win the job and is working extra hard to do so.

He has been spending an extra 2hours daily going over practice film and game film from when Enos was at Arkansas. He stated that Enos and Diaz both expect & demand perfection. Enos is not a guy who accepts mediocre & he wants everything done perfectly on and off the field with his QB being expected to be the leader of the team and command the offense.

He also said that he is working on taking snaps under center because he’s always been in a spread offense but will have to be under center some in Enos offense. He says the the offense is very exciting and it’s stresses defenses causing them to overthink even though to the offense it’s very simple and if the right read is made then there’s always answers if the first option isn’t there. He doesn’t see himself in competition with Tate & N’kosi but rather in competition with himself to get better everyday knowing that he’ll be ready if named the starter.

Keeping with tradition of Mork's plan last season of having no plan at all. Can't reiterate this enough... Thank fvck he's gone.

Excellent article. Didnt like this line though...

"He took Coach Diaz for his word that he'd have a clean slate, a fair shot to win the job", Wofford (high school coach) said. "So, he wants to give it a shot through Spring".

Give it a shot "through Spring"?!? So he is already in the mindset that if he doesn't win the starting job he is out? I sure hope not as it takes one hit for a #2 to become the guy, and if Tate gets the nod, Id rather have Williams as 2 than any of the others. I dont know any other way to interpret that quote though. Then again, theres a strong chance a starter is not decided on by the end of Spring.

I have zero clue as to why he did not play in the bowl game. Rosier was done so why play him and Kosi was in the doghouse and he was dog**** in that game too. Why not play your true freshman and still keep the redshirt in tact?

Anyways, doesn’t matter now since Richt and Co are gone and a whole new offensive staff came in and are giving him a fair shot to win the job. It will come down to him and Martell.

The reality we have to deal with is that Jarren is a RS Fresh and Tate is a RS Soph. So long as one emerges as the starter during next Fall, the other likely won't be around after next season. Even though it would be the second transfer for Tate, he will likely be able to graduate and be eligible elsewhere as a grad transfer. Jarren would likely need to sit a year.

I can't imagine Jarren looking to transfer so long as he feels he is trending towards a real shot at starting coming out of Spring.

So long as they're all around heading into Fall, I think we are going to end up with some quality QB play.

TBH, JW probably should have started the last 5-6 games last year or even sooner.

I hear that, and I agree. I was just taken aback by the "through Spring" part. I fully get that whoever doesnt start in 2019 may decide to play elsewhere in 2020. But its concerning to think he may already be contemplating that post-spring; as in, Im planning on bolting BEFORE the start of this season if I dont think Im getting the nod, so that 2019 is my sit out year. I would understand that and wouldnt hate on him for it, but that's troubling to me if true. Maybe im reading more into that sentence than I should be. Just a strange way to phrase it, and to me it is very telling that it was said that way.
