Jalen Rivers comp

So have Rivers battle it out with Cohen and Cooper for the guard spots. Thats what the good to elite teams have happen every single year. Then put it out in the portal that the LT job is up for grabs. Look if Rivers ends up being the best options at Tackle, so be it, you gotta do what you gotta do, but it shouldnt be because we already have Cooper and Cohen there.
My point is, then who is the LT? Nelson’s Knee? Who else? Transfer?

Transfer and see how Samson develops over the summer. He didn’t look anywhere to close as good as Mauigoa but it’s only his first spring. ****, maybe we move Mauigoa to LT and find a transfer for RT.

He’s the starter at LT because he’s the best available option. A healthy Zion is likely starting there but a healthy Zion is something we haven’t seen in a long time. Sampson isn’t strong enough to be a P5 starter right now. I’m sure he could do the job in a pinch but clearly the coaches don’t think he’s there yet. Maybe they can find someone in the portal but we have to be realistic about portal candidates. Javion Cohen was an anomaly. There’s very few starting offensive linemen from elite teams entering the portal. Guys in the portal are usually either guys who lost their starting position or guys from small programs trying to make one final splash at a P5 program to improve their draft stock.

Per PFF via Sports Illustrated “During the last seven games of the 2021 season, Nelson allowed zero sacks and received a 90.8 pass-blocking grade.”

He also was PFF 8th best offensive tackle nationally coming into the 2022 season.

8th out of 258 is pretty stout.
I stand corrected. I thought his grading would have been much worse.

He started off 2021 slow, as he had an injury in fall camp that set him back. He barely got healthy and ready enough to play in opener vs. Alabama

He had a terrible play in game 3 vs. Michigan State where he whiffed gave up a sack fumble that basically cost Miami game as they had the momentum.

After he settled in and was 100% he was really good though. Unfortunately injuries have been an issue last few years, but I'm of the belief that a fully healthy Zion Nelson would take this OL to possibly the best OL in ACC.

Zion
Cohen
Lee
Rivers/Cooper
Mauigoa/Rivers

I put Rivers in at RG as he could potentially be better than a young Cooper in pass protection
Also if Mauigoa has early season struggles, you have a veteran option in Rivers that could help out there.
