I'm not debating what Miami did 35 years ago ... Times have changed.
Pitt was a national power 35 years ago ... Why aren't they, now?
And as for the lowering of expectations for prospective coaches ... I think people allow the results to skew the actual hire from years ago.
Jimmy Johnson was a 29-25-3 at Oklahoma State, with 2 losing seasons in 5 years as a HC. And he never finished higher than 3rd in the Big 8. And the year he was hired by UM, he went 3-4 in the Big 8.
... That's hardly a case of Miami going for the biggest coach available.
Erickson coached at Washington State ... And before that, he coached at Wyoming and Idaho.
And his record at WSU was 12-10-1. And he went 6-6 at Wyoming. Again, that wasn't an elite hire.
And those Butch Davis credentials, pre-hiring, are comical. That's Dave Wannstedt. No, I'm not saying Butch and Dave are the same ... But their credentials when Butch was hired would have been equal.
It's easy to justify something after the fact ... But nobody knows who will be great, until they're great.
Lastly ... It's not about pay! These dudes are already making millions. They're not coming to Miami to make the same money. Patterson, Stoops, and Richt have already built their programs. They're not interested in pressing "reset", IMO.
Pagano and Chud? The only way they are coming to Miami is to replace Philbin. Maybe Chud replaces Lazor, if he gets a HC job and Pep Hamilton remains the OC in Indy.
Outside of Kiffin and Davis, none of those other guys would come to Miami, IMO.
Lol. Name the coaches you want the school to look at if golden is fired.
OK ace.
Butch Davis
Gary Patterson
Chuck Pagano
Mark Richt
Bob Stoops
Chud
Lane Kiffin
Etc etc
Low expectations, huh?
Low expectations are a DISEASE.
- Ten years ago, 9 wins got a coach fired at Miami. Today, 7 wins gets you a contract extension.
- A decade ago, the expectation was national titles. Five years ago, the bar was to win the ACC. Today, the bar is set at winning the Coastal.
Before they were at Miami:
Lou Saban -
Head Coach, Buffalo Bills
Howard Schnellenberger -
Head Coach, Baltimore Colts (prev. OC at Miami Dolphins, Super Bowl, undefeated season)
Jimmy Johnson -
Head Coach, Oklahoma State (Big 12)
Dennis Erickson -
Head Coach, Washington
Butch Davis -
Defensive Coordinator, Dallas Cowboys (Super Bowl Champ)
Since then?
Lowered expectations.
Larry Coker -
College assistant
Randy Shannon -
College assistant
Al Golden - LOL
Raise the bar again. I expect national championships, and I expect the University to spend the money it takes to hire a competent staff like they used to do. Don't tell me it can't be done or it isn't realistic. We've done it before.
