ITT We Follow Potential 2015 Coaching Candidate Week 4

if we get a chance to interview Herman, I hope the admin mentions the 30 for 30 since he has included it in his foundation

Our decision makers don't like that Doc.

unfortunately

So would it be smart to say?

Of course it would be smart to say. Herman is using the model of UMiami at Houston. He should be using that model at UMiami. Additionally, I believe some of the BOT members that will actually interview candidates enjoyed the docs. The more academic admin (not just BOT) are the ones that didnt like it as much.

I would stay away from mentioning the Doc with our idiots in charge.

Fuente is a bad dude. Been on him since last year. We'd be incredibly lucky to have him. He beat a team with twice the talent yesterday, and he's won 13 straight at a program that was something like 5-35 the 4 years before he got there.

This is why you need to act quickly when you are hiring coaches. The longer you wait around the more competition there is and the more choices the coach has.

I love Herman too, but the only question with Herman is that he inherited an incredible QB in Ward. I know Ward's gotten better under Herman, but I watched him a lot last year, and you could see that Ward was going to eventually be awesome.

In the end, we'd be fortunate to have either guy. I'm not going to get into that whole "my guy" thing where I dig my heels in on the guy I was on early (Fuente). There are a lot of guys who would kill here, and Herman and Fuente are two of them.

This.

Offer the winner of the Memphis at Houston game, and get the deal done. If we can't, then hire the loser of that game.

One them should be the next HC in Coral Gables.

I think picking our coach based on one game is pretty stupid.

Let me put it this way...If you were deciding between Harbaugh and Dantonio, would you make the decision based on the outcome of the one time they play this year? Does anyone think Dantonio is a better coach than Harbaugh because MSU won?

I don't think your comparison is applicable.

Harbaugh and Dantonio have a much more complete body of work to compare, so using that 1 game would be stupid.

But if we're making a move this year, Herman will only have 1 season as HC. So, how he coaches that Memphis game is a big deal, to me.

I actually think Memphis will win the game, and further validate Fuente.

And beyond that, the winner of that game will likely win the conference ... Which I think should be a consideration.

I think you take the better coach regardless.

The point of my example was Habaugh is a better coach, him losing that game because of a Punter named Potato doesn't invalidate that. One game for Herman or Fuente doesn't negate their tenures. Take the one you think will be better for Miami period.

Agree that choosing which coach should be our top option based on the outcome of one game is ill-advised.

Speaking of coaching candidates, that fake punt (if you can call it that) just now in the NE-IND game might seal Pagano's fate in Indianapolis. Holy s*** that was awful.

I suspect the guys not interested in having the winner of the Memphis vs. Houston game have a clear preference for a choice. And they'd have a problem with their choice losing.

Though I prefer Fuente, I'd take either of them.

And truth be told ... You take the guy who expresses the most interest in the job. The guy who wants the job most, will be the best fit, IMO.

I assume this is a response to me so I will bite.

I am of the group who is not interested in hiring a first time HC at Miami who is simply a **** college coordinator. Before this season, I wouldn't consider Herman as a candidate for the Miami gig at all. Sure he was a **** coordinator who has a really good pedigree under Urban, but I wanted to see what he can do coaching the whole team. Just like Montgomery or Morris, show me what you can do as an HC.

As for Fuente, before the season, I wanted to see two things (1) can he repeat that success of 2014, and (2) how will his team play against a more talented roster (Ole ****). Now that Fuente has beat Ole **** and run 13 straight, I am sold on his qualifications. Today, if we were deciding between the two, I would go Fuente. He has won the conference, won 10 games last season and the bowl and now has run off 13 straight wins at Memphis. Memphis is now ranked #17 . What more can he do at Memphis?

As for Herman, I think he is doing an incredible job. He has a good win at UL. His teams are putting up 45.6 PPG and winning by 24.3 PPG. That is pretty dominating.

As for Memphis v. Houston (in Houston), I think it will be an interesting game. The game LIKELY will likely decide who is the winner of the west. For Herman, I think the game holds more water. I think his tenure isn't as impressive as Fuente. If Memphis lost to Ole ****, I would then say "focus on the outcome of this game more". I would make this a mini-super bowl....but once Fuente beat Ole ****, he fully qualified himself and that was the cherry on top.

If both teams go on and win 10+ games during the regular season, does that mean that one of them is lesser qualified because they lost? Maybe. But IMO, it is just one game. Their WHOLE tenure is a bigger sample size. I don't dismiss the game, I just don't negate their tenures because of a loss. That goes for either coach losing.

As for the part in bold, I don't believe either will come chasing after us. I believe we will need to court both and show interest first. I truly believe that the only one who will hold us back from landing EITHER is our BOT/Admin.

No. I'd be thrilled with either Herman or Fuente. I just think it's absurd to place that much emphasis in a coaching search on the outcome of one game.

Some are going to partake in overreaction theater when either of them loses at some point this season, saying off-the-wall s*** like "who wanted that corch for Miami" and "I told you my preferred candidate was better." Those people are morons. Either of these guys would have a chance to kill it here.

One of them becomes dogchit if they lose. Utter dogchit.

Would it be better for me to word it as:

Offer the coach who actually wins the conference?

LOL

I get the point you and Consig are making. And I probably agree with you guys ...

But I think winning the conference this year should matter, because this (hypothetically) is the the year we would need to make a hire. And I think the winner of that game will win the conference.

The losing coach isn't a bum. And I have said as much ... I would be equally happy with either of them.

I just think you have to have some criteria to the order of offering the job. And I don't think you can go 100% after both candidates ... Because if both are receptive, someone is gonna get shafted.

Well if Fuente wins the conference then he has the edge on Herman. However, it's important to remember that Herman is in his first season so he may actually have more upside. Of course, it wouldn't be fair to judge a first season at Memphis so I'm not comparing first seasons.

A couple things...

- Fuente's Memphis Tigers are in action tonight against Philip Montgomery's Tulsa squad. Memphis is favored by 9. Kickoff is around 8:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.

- Cardale Jones was benched this week at Ohio State. This is relevant because many were talking about him as a possible first-round prospect after his outstanding three-game stretch in the Big 10 Championship Game and inaugural CFB playoff with Tom Herman as his QB coach, co-OC, and playcaller. Jones regressed big time without Herman and lost his spot back to J.T. Barrett. Very noticeable impact there.
