ITT We Discuss Possible Golden Replacements

I hope Mark Stoops gets a look. I'm also waiting on MedleyCane's list. He's usually spot on with his lists..

Not sure why no one is giving Curtis Johnson more thought. Two years of HC experience, spent almost a decade here. Knows the recruiting landscape. Lots of NFL experience. Second year at Tulane has been an improvement over his first. I think they will give him a hard look.

I swear to god if they hire Curtis Johnson.

Kiffin is a horrible coach, and a horrible person to have affiliated with your program. he doesn't win most importantly and on top of that he is a dirt ball. We're talking about the same guy who drove a Preseason #1 team into the ***n ground!! That idiot Orgeron coached circles around Kiffin after he took over and he's about 2 chromosomes away from being a caveman.

While i'm ranting.

Cane4life... you no absolutely nothing about everything related to UM. Please stop with the sewage you throw onto the board everyday. You have no clue and somehow pretend your hooked in and have all this clarity as to what is and will be happening. WOAT poster I've seen over the last few weeks.

Stop it. I'm a Tulane alum. CJ is still learning how to be a head coach, and he'd be in over his head right now at Miami. He brought Tulane to a bowl for the first time since 2002, and it's first winning season since 2002, but their offense was pathetic, and his gameday skills were lacking (clock management for one). The defense was amazing, but a lot of that can be credited to Lionel Washington, the DC (hey, let's hire him. NFL experience too). Anyway, CJ is a good recruiter, but average as a gameday coach. Tulane also benefited from playing in a weakened C-USA this year. Next year they move to the AAC. I think CJ will be a good coach, but I think he's 3-4 years away. Let's not crown him yet.

Charlie Strong
Rob Chudzinski
Kirby Smart
Bobby Petrino
Butch Davis
Lane Kiffin
Chad Morris
James Franklin
Pat Narduzzi
Mike Leach
Greg Schiano
Curtis Johnson
Ed Orgeron
Mario Cristobal

In order of preference

Lane Kiffin? Really? Great recruiter but horrible track record as a coach. ESPN anchors wouldn't even be able to report this they'd be laughing so hard.

If they go inproven as a head coach my preference would be Smart (unlikely), Narduzzi, Morris in that order. Although Morris is definitely intriguing. Those offensive guys seem to do well. Overall if any of the following were hired I'd be fine too: Strong, Franklin, or an NFL guy (though not Schiano, what a joke). Butch is unlikely and Petrino is extremely unlikely but is by far the best coach on the market IMO. Bobby Petrino is among the top handful of coaches in the country if you ask me.

LOL Wut? "Hooked in"? Where the F*CK have I ever claimed to be hooked into ANYTHING? You must have sh*t for brains or have me mistaken with someone else. Im simply pointing out reality pal. Let me guess, you are another one of these "Donna is going to spend 5 million dollars to hire Nick Saban" brainiacs, is that it? Better get your bottle of Pepto ready bud. The last go around, Al Golden from Temple, and Randy Edsall from UConn were the finalists. Our HC is the 7th highest paid in the ACC. UM just spent 3 years in an NCAA scandal, and is currently on probation, something that has been a huge embarassment to a school trying to build its prestige and join the ranks of elite academic institutions. And you really think for ONE second, that Donna Shalala, who has made it her mission to improve the prestige of UM, is going to hire a guy who presided over the biggest NCAA academic scandal in history as an HC here? WHILE on NCAA probation? LOL.

Make sure you tighten the chinstrap on your helmet Corky, your going to be in for a harsh reality check.

"Crown him"? Big difference between "Crowning" the guy, and saying that he is the kind of coach they are going to seriously look at. Everything you just wrote sounds just like Butch's early days here, except he had ZERO HC experience at all.

Dont get me wrong. Im not PUSHING for CJ. I dont really see ANY good options for us, not based on what I think is realistic. I think the best we can even HOPE for, would be Chud or Schiano at this point. I think Butch and Petrino are a fantasy that is never going to happen. I think they are going to go for a lower tier younger HC, and up and comer like Golden was. CJ fits that bill perfectly. Two seasons as an HC. NFL experience. Was an assistant here for almost a decade. Knows the program and recruiting. And is in the price range.

Thread is a total waste of time.
He's not coming in any way shape or form.
I wish folks would drop it already.

You're the one person I'd like to hear from re: a list of candidates. If you're unwilling to post, please send me a PM. Over the last 15 years, you've rocked all of these.

include me on that PM as well. WOuld love to know who Medley likes and thinks is viable.

Medley - start your own thread if you'd like.

Wow, appreciate your kind words SFBay and LuCane.
I'm as clueless about this as anyone else.
I know alot of our fellow fans want it to be Petrino, but I wonder if he would considered
"hire-able" by UM because of the manner in which he lost his job at Arkansas.
Great coach though.
He would do well down here.
One other (recruiting) concern would be that James Coley is probably headed elsewhere if Petrino is the HC,
as Petrino runs his own offense and has his own QB coach in Jeff Brohm.
I also think Petrino would do better not to bring in 2-3 of his most junior coaches from the WKU staff,
especially his son-in-law, and instead use those slots for grey-beard assistant coaches or a coach like
Telly Lockett (ie., RB coach) who has extensive ties to soFla hs ball.
Now, perhaps Brohm stays on at WKU as HC if Petrino leaves to UM.
Which is conceivable as Brohm and his family are big names in the state of Kentucky.
This would work well for Petrino as he would not have to bring as many assistants
from WKU, and perhaps fit Coley as QB coach.

I guess the other name that would pop up as a candidate is Mario.
I don't think he would be as bad as some of his detractors believe, but I don't think
he is the direction we need to take.
He did some good things at FIU but, on the other hand, didn't dominate the Sun Belt.
He did some have decent assistant coaches, and his last DC at FIU was Todd Orlando, who
had a pretty good 2013 season at Utah State.

Why do folks find it hard to understand that Butch is not hire-able by this program?
I'm stunned by how many of our fellow fans really can't grasp this reality.

Thing with Mario is he's tied in with Coley. That means Coley stays and they can salvage some of the recruiting class. Also figure he keeps some of the current guys like Hurlie and Barrow that helps recruiting. He's part of the family, and is felt to be a pretty good recruiter. They also get him cheap, meaning more money for a bigger name DC. As much as I agree with you that we should not be going in that direction, I think the obviousness of it is going to be too much for James and Donna to resist, especially when the few top targets dont work out. The reason I have been so OBNOXIOUSLY throwing his name around in this thread, is because I think he is a MUCH higher possibility than any of these people realize, and they are going to melt down if it happens.

just thinking out loud.. The possibility of Coach O as HC.. Elite recruiter plus his USC stint, however, the con is his tenure with Ole Miss was less than desirable.

Because the idiots of this board are living in self-delusion and think that Miami is still the king of college football, when the program has been the butt of jokes for years. Anyone who thinks that it will be okay and we'll get Butch, Schiano, Petrino, or Chud, and we'll win the MNC soon enough are going to be traumatized when they realize how ****ed the program will become if we mess up the next hire.

He flopped at Ole Miss. He was a drunk and was arrested when he was a coach here. He's also a walking whack job. Dude is very rough around the edges. Would be a FANTASTIC DC. I dont see UM seriously considering him.
