UM tight end Clive Walford didn’t win the Mackey Award, but he was one of 13 Hurricanes named to ACC coaches’ All-ACC team.

Walford, a senior from Glades Central High, was a second-team selection behind Mackey Award winner and Florida State senior Nick O’Leary, a Dwyer High grad. During the regular season, Walford led ACC tight ends in yards (676) and touchdowns (seven) and was third in receptions (44, most of any Hurricane).

True freshman quarterback Brad Kaaya won the ACC coaches’ rookie of the year award and was a runaway winner for offensive rookie of the year. Kaaya was not named to the first, second, or third teams or honorable mention. He led the ACC in passer rating (148.2) and touchdowns (25) and was second in passing yards (2,962). The latter two numbers are records for a UM freshman.

Kaaya, 19, was invited to Charlotte last weekend to receive the conference’s rookie of the year award. He said he would have liked to have worn his pads, not a suit.

“It was a huge honor but at the same time it was a bit bittersweet,” he said. “I would much rather be playing the ACC championship game in Charlotte than receiving an award.”

Miami (6-6, 3-5 ACC) faces South Carolina (6-6, 3-5 SEC) on Dec. 27 in the Duck Commander Independence Bowl (3:30 p.m., ABC).

Miami’s first-team selections were running back Duke Johnson (who earned one coaches’ vote for conference player of the year), center Shane McDermott (Palm Beach Central High) and linebacker Denzel Perryman (two votes for defensive player of the year).

Johnson, UM’s all-time leader in rushing yards (3,387) and all-purpose yards (5,351), was second in the conference in yards (1,520, with 10 touchdowns). That single-season yardage total is second in UM history, 233 behind Willis McGahee (1,753 in 2002).

Walford, receiver Phillip Dorsett and left tackle Ereck Flowers made second team. Defensive end Anthony Chickillo and punter Justin Vogel were third-team picks.

Left guard Jon Feliciano, defensive end Olsen Pierre, cornerback Artie Burns and safety Deon Bush were named honorable mention.

Coaches could not vote for their own players. Players earned three points for a first-team vote, two for second-team and one for third-team.

Seriously, we should be one, two loss tops. Loss to Louisville - Kaaya wasn't ready yet. And maybe FSU.

Butch Davis is smirking cause he knows he will win again easy here. Talent is for the taking.

6-6 is embarrassing with this roster. I used to think that you could be an average coach and still win here. I guess I was wrong.

You're not.

An average coach would be an improvement at this point. In fact, plug in your average ACC football coach, and this year we're probably pushing 10 wins.

Don't believe me?

Who do you take Golden over? Maybe the bottom 2 or 3? Maybe?

It's quite possible we have the worst coach in the ACC. Marinate on that for a bit.

Hope he's healthy for the combine.

What's the ratio of Muck players going to UM and going to the NFL? Walford, Benjamin, Santonio Thomas. I'm missing plenty of people but it seems to be a pretty high success rate.

****, it just got WORSE! Now you remove Chrystal and replace him with Narduzzi...its pathetic LOL.

good pick up by shannon, next year assuming asante cleveland and chase ford make rosters again he will have found 3 active NFL tight ends

Every offensive lineman that we have had that started in the past couple of years has went to the NFL... every tightend dating back to Ritchard gordon, jimmy graham, chase ford, Asante Cleveland and now walford will be in the NFL....every running back that has started in the last 3 years as well in Lamar miller, mike James and now Duke..... Miami still produces. **** we have been underachieving for too long man....

Which is just a further testament to how much we have underachieved and how **** poor the last 3 coaching staffs have been.

Ideal situation for him would be the Packers. He is a perfect fit there.
