Bellotti made the program relevant. He wanted to keep that going so prompted Chip. Chip at the time was considered one of the elite coaches. Played in a national title. Went to the NFL.I’ll tell ya this , next time you have some spare time on your hands go look at Oregon’s last four coaching hires. After you do that go look at these coaches resume‘s prior to getting the Oregon head job. After reading that ask yourself is that a top tier job? Top tier jobs aren’t hiring those guys. Now Mario has a resume but back then he had nada.
Oregon follows their recipe for success and promotes Chip’s OC. Helfrich got off to a hot start first two seasons and plays in a national title before flaming out.
Oregon conducts national search to go in a different direction. Taggary is one of the hotter coaching options at that times fresh off a 10-2 season at USF. Hindsight is 20/20 but at the time he was considered a hot commodity.
Mario was then promoted. Weird move. But it’s worked out so far. Point is, if you actually look at the process you realize these weren’t desperate moves. These were moves made with intention. And it’s worked out for the most part. They have like the 7th most wins over the last 15 years and have played in 2 title games. No wins lol but still pretty decent run.
