Issiah Walker update…

a lot of athletes are also using it as a crutch or free pass (see simon biles or that tennis chick). It should not be taken lately , however im sure you can see it is also being exploited.
There’s a difference between what Walker is going through and Osaka, for example. Walker seems to have serious mental health issues and I wish him nothing but the best - hopefully he finds happiness in life as everyone deserves that.

I wish the same for Osaka, but there’s a difference between mental health and pressure. She broke down because opposing fans were booing her - that’s pressure in my eyes. It’s a very fine line because you NEVER want to just assume someone isn’t struggling; but she’s been in and out so many times, I question her mental fortitude in a sport that basically requires it. Just my two cents.

Anyways, this is about Walker - he’s been struggling for quite some time, and he needs all the help he can get. I wish him nothing but the best.

Yeah man it’s such a difficult space to navigate. Mental health is on the decline, but also it’s so much more in the spotlight

Do people use it as an excuse when they are faced with some kind of adversity? Or just want attention? For sure. Is it still silently killing tons of people? For sure.

I can only speak from my side where I’m sort of an “influencer” or whatever with health and fitness. And so many people turn towards some kind of fitness or athletic angle when they’re struggling with mental health, so I’ve had first hand interactions with so many people about this over the years. The more we learn about it the more complicated it gets it feels

Anyway, sorry for the rant-ish, but you’re just spot on

These arent 30-40 year old grown people here. I give them a little more grace then I give grown people.
why? You think mental illness is somehow easier for older people? How about someone who has dealt with mental health issues most of their life? Maybe give everyone some ******* grace.

If i'm Deion, i'm reaching out to him ASAP and getting him to JSU

Hate to be "that guy" but this does free up a spot in the 85 right?

Kid like this needs to just go to a school where he has no pressure to live up to his lofty expectations and he can just play football and be a college kid. Lower level FCS or something far far away. Wouldnt even suggest he go to FAMU like I ususally do. Go somewhere OOS and start all over again.

Yes, it frees up a spot against the 85.

Dangerous move by Walker if he's getting quality treatment at Miami. Free education and free mental health is something all of us wish we had access to. I really hope for his sake his trust circle isn't steering him in the wrong direction. Best wishes to the kid.

Whoa whoa whoa, cool it with the toxic masculinity bub.

so Kevin love, demar derozan among others are just recent athletes who have spoke about mental health issues they struggle with daily. they're not elite in their profession? how bout we stop diagnosing guys on CIS. we dont know what Waker deals with daily.
I really wish the narrative on this would change from I have mental health challenges and I struggle to this is how I cope with it and this is what may cause it. Obviously people naturally have depression, anxiety etc, but there are ways to manage it naturally that really isn’t talked about as much as it should be. Obviously you can’t just eliminate it overnight. I wish more people talked about how alcohol, drug use, and social media impact your mental health negatively. And I’m not saying those guys you listed have depression because of alcohol use etc. I just wish people got that message out there more that there are lifestyle changes you can make to improve your mental health.

If you’re a 23 year old and you spend Thursday - Sunday drinking, doing Coke, eating like ****; and not exercising then yeah your mental health is going to suffer big time especially when you throw in chronic social media use during the week.

And it’s always hard to figure out where that trigger is for people

I didn’t grow up with social media but with my work now I spend a lot of time on it (creating my own content)

And as soon as I find myself scrolling mindlessly and consuming, I honestly feel a shift in my health and mental health

Not saying that’s everyone and that social media is inherently evil (it’s an incredible tool) but it’s also gotta be tough growing up not knowing anything else

Agreed. Poor lifestyle, hygiene, and dietary choices can definitely lead to bouts of depressed mood and mental state. People really need to educate themselves on how living their life online more often than not is a severely negative experience and can affect their overall wellbeing.

However, as people say "there's levels to this ****." To put it more professionally it's more nuanced than that. Some people are more naturally and genetically predisposed to it than others. While better lifestyle choices and habits can help manage and even prevent/cure some people, it may do jack **** for others. You may not be making the argument that a healthy lifestyle will prevent/cure depression but as I mentioned before that's not the case with many people. Natural hormone imbalances and deficiencies/ mental disorders and diseases are a real thing just as much as physical ones. Think of it like addiction. Some people are more affected by it than others. And others need psychiatric and medical help in managing it.

Yeah I wasn’t making that argument hence why I used the word manage, but you’re right.

The point I was making is that I wish more people got the message out that this is what you can do to help manage it and to make yourself less susceptible. Obviously it’s not the end all be all, but the message of healthy lifestyle habits needs to be spread more IMO

I mean biles literally went through a situation where she couldn't see herself make the landing. in gymnastics, thats the end where you shouldn't compete. however, she's far from a person who can't handle the pressure. she's literally one of the. greatest gymnasts of all time and absolutely elite in her profession. Ricky Williams struggled with mental health issues and anxiety his entire career and he was elite. the statement that you can't be elite was ridiculous. many elite athletes and professionals struggle with mental health bc it all diff causes
The problem I have with Biles is she withdrew from the competition after a terrible performance and then less than a week later is competing again. Definitely raises suspicion

Who gives a ****e? There are also plenty of athletes who "play hurt". Doesn't mean it's the smartest decision and/or that it won't result in further injury.

So you would suggest continuing to compete without being in the correct headspace/ dealing with depression. That would be better than taking time off to regroup/recover from it? That’s a dumb take.

Continuing to attempt to compete while not properly dealing with it would be like playing with an injury. Continuing without healing is just going to make it worse.

The problem people have with depression is it’s not visible and not everybody deals or has dealt with it so they can’t relate. It also becomes a political issue somehow too which is ridiculous as well.
