Contrast that with Lee Haney who never went above 315 and still looks great.

But resistance work of some kind to maintain bone density and strength is important. It can just be done in many ways.

Do isometric holds on the leg extension (quads) machine 5 x 45 seconds. Do them before lifting or do them as much as you want. I do them 4-6 times a week. Shouldnt be a struggle - it’s just for knee tendons If you don’t have access to leg extension machine you can use kettlebell. By far the most crucial thing I doFor me it’s my knees.
